How long would it take to do a 12 mile commute on an ebike?

I'm thinking about looking into an ebike so that I can cycle to work two days per week. It is 12 miles, partly through city and partly along a cycle path by a main road. There is one big hill on the journey, but otherwise pretty flat. I'm curious to know how long it would actually take.

its takes me an hour to cycle 10 hilly miles on a normal bike, so an electric bike doing 12 miles might be 40 minutes maybe?

Maybe 35 minutes

That depends how quick you're going!

I don't have any electric bikes, but for reference I have a hybrid that my average is around 12mph (probably because I pootle around town and cycle with my kids on that one) and a road bike where my average is 15/16mph.

Even with an ave of 15mph my old 13 mile commute would take over an hour, because of traffic on the roads, or poor paths off road etc and general tiredness after a 10+ hr shift.

I have moved further away and can't commit to the full journey anymore, but I have a folding bike now and drive within a few miles and cycle the rest of the way. Is this a possibility for you?

I think I could manage it if it was under an hour, but if it's going to be more than an hour I'll be pushed to fit it in.

I've done a slightly longer route to work before (which misses out the big hill) and that was 14 miles and took about 1h 15.

They're limited to 16 miles p/hr, but realistically you won't be going top speed all the way, so probably close to an hour.

I'd reckon an hour

Is it worth it? Can you shower and change at work?

RampantIvy · 21/09/2023 22:53

Can you put your route into google map and set it to bike to give you a rough estimate?

OhcantthInkofaname · 21/09/2023 22:54

Math?

I ride an ebike. I average around 11mph but that is through city traffic eg lots of stopping at lights. Top speed is 20mph downhill snd 15-17mph on flat. They are heavy- I prob average same journey time as when I used to ride a road bike.

NotMeNoNo · 21/09/2023 22:55

You should be able to do it in an hour. With an ebike you arrive at work ready to start, no need for showering and minimal if any changing, which saves time.

Google maps says 1h10 on a normal bike.

I do have shower/changing facilities at work. The main reason I'd like to do it is to build more exercise into my day.

I cycle a similar distance on my e-bike and it takes me between an hour and 1hr ten depending on traffic etc. That said I have a cargo bike which is super heavy, and altho fit I am a fairly slow cyclist! The main benefit is I don't get sweaty enough to need to shower etc at work (altho never been a hugely sweaty cyclist anyway)

Do you know anyone who could lend you one to try the route out? E-bikes will speed you up a lot vs a normal bike if there are hills or a headwind. Otherwise you can probably equal the time on a road bike, but it'll take more exertion.

I think it's a great idea - it is a brilliant way to get more exercise without having to schedule a specific activity.
