Talk to me about sherry

We've got an older relative coming to stay for the weekend. She likes to have a sherry, or maybe two in the evening.

I'm googling but it's driving me a bit insane... all I know is she doesn't like it too dry.

Which one is good? (I'll probably send her home with the bottle)

I'm reading medium sherry should be served between 12-14 degrees.. how the hell? Fridge for a bit then leave it out?

Champagne glass, wine glass or tumbler?

Ice? Confused

How much to serve? Small wine glass worth like 100ml?

Thanks!

Just repeating PP's - definitely cream Sherry. The Waitrose own brand one is lovely. You will always get Sherry glasses in charity shops.

So after buying two different bottles of sherry (thanks for the recommendations - got a Waitrose one and another) and Waitrose sherry glasses as I didn't have time to go to a charity shop.... she didn't drink any of it 😂

I obviously didn't mention I got it especially so despite offering a Sherry about 5 times over the weekend she chose a spritzer or a glass of red 🤦🏼‍♀️

Now I have two bottles of sherry and two sherry glasses I will probably never use. I need to invite another sherry drinker round, I'm assuming they will keep a while 😂

Give it to her for Christmas. Or make the mother of all sherry trifles.

Open the Sherry and give it a go. I bloody love sherry, especially before Christmas, it is essential to present wrapping and tree decorating

ThatSunCreamSmell · 24/09/2023 10:19

Yeah I'm thinking I just crack it open at this point tbh 😂 I've never tried it so you never know!

@Papillon23 I might have to ask although I know I'll get "oh don't worry dear I'll be fine with anything, don't go to any trouble" etc

At the risk of de-railing the thread, people who come up with replies like that when asked a simple question about their preferences should be put up against a wall and shot (looking at you MIL!)

ThatSunCreamSmell · 24/09/2023 11:18

Agree. And in hindsight I probably should have asked as I might not have bought two unnecessary bottles of sherry with matching glasses 😂

Oh OP don't write off a sherry! Wait until a cold winters evening, or better still just as it's getting dark on a Sunday afternoon and have a glass. Absolutely delicious!

I can almost guarantee you won't stop at one

MrsSkylerWhite · 24/09/2023 11:33

Ah, love a “brown” sherry at Christmas. It doesn’t live me, though. Get a headache before I’ve finished the glass. Can’t remember what it’s called but the Lidl sweet sherry is good (the sherry, not the “fortified” stuff).

DobbyTheHouseElk · 24/09/2023 11:37

Sherry is lush. It makes you feel warm and sleepy. Much stronger than wine. Perfect for a weekend. It doesn’t keep so once it’s opened you really have to drink it. I have it room temperature, you can put ice in it.

DanielsDancingMonkey · 24/09/2023 11:50

My advice is to drink it yourself, and open the door to the wonderful world of Sherry.

You can’t beat a glass of chilled La Gitana on a hot summer evening, served with some cubes of chorizo and Gouda. Or a warm, sweet Pedro Ximenez on a winter’s night, with a mince pie.

AdaColeman · 24/09/2023 14:04

You can't beat Pedro Ximenez served with a blue cheese.
Or...
Spooned over good vanilla ice cream for a quick delicious pudding.
