Stitching up a split silk pillowcase. Again.

My silk-topped cotton pillowcase has split at either end. I've sewn it up twice, but it only lasts a couple of months.

Any tips? Is it worth doing again? Could I secure it with bias binding on both seams, or is the silk just going to come away again?

Thanks

It is a lost cause. Every time you are repairing it you are taking a little more out of the fabric, putting the pillowcase under greater strain. It is the same as repairing clothes that tear at the seams.
If you really want to save it you could try joining some other fabric on to the silk. You will have to take the seem deep. Bias binding is not enough.

Seam slippage is a bugger on silk items that are washed regularly. I think bias binding will be too heavy. You need the thinnest needle you can find and silky thread that doesn't grate on the silk fibres. You can try sewing cotton muslin or silk panels on each worn bit, but if the silk has had lots of wear it's probably a lost cause sadly.

Thanks both!

'Lost Cause' quoted on both, so I'll give that up as a bad job for now Grin

I like the alternatives you've both provided though, it's made me think.

I'm wondering if I could just remove the silk bit & add it as a hemmed 'panel' insert onto a plain cotton pillowcase? I suppose it might not be as cool then...

Anyone would think I'm looking for jobs Wink
