Where should we live? Older kids, semi rural, large space, anywhere considered

We are considering moving from Devon now our 2 youngest are hone educated. DH permanently WFH and I could work anywhere as an NHS AHP.

We would like 4 or 5 bed with lots of outside space, near enough to a town for supermarkets etc but we are currently in a small village and ideally want to keep that vibe.

I have been browsing Rightmove for areas I know but we are open to moving anywhere that isn't freezing or overly touristy so I wondered whether you lovely lot might be able to suggest places for us to look into! We are not very well travelled in the UK so are

what About East Sussex there’s some good sized villages near Lewes which have bus or train routes into Brighton (good for teens). Not sure what AHP means but there’s plenty of hospitals round there. Pricier than Devon though.

MyEyesMyThighs · 21/09/2023 13:02

Why are you leaving Devon? That might help narrow down the suggestions.

Primefungus · 21/09/2023 13:09

Allied health professional. And not needing or wanting to leave Devon really, just thinking we don't need to limit ourselves to here. We wondered where else is out there, as we have no clue. I've lived around here since I was 13 and although I love it here it is quite expensive.

Malvern? Lovely small town but with plenty of facilities, a train station and wonderful hills.

Alstroemeria123 · 21/09/2023 13:14

What’s your budget?

Primefungus · 21/09/2023 13:16

Budget kind of depends. Like for like we could have about 330 but I would like to drop a day at work so nearer 300 would make that more likely.

Northern Ireland. Lively home ed community, lots of bang for your buck house price wise

I know you've said large and semi-rural, but with older kids public transport becomes important - it's so helpful if your 14 year old can get a bus or train into town. This is in a blissfull valley that leads into countryside, and 15m from a sandy beach, but being on the edges of a town means you are also 15m a train station, and ten minutes from a library and a cinema

I found this property on the Rightmove Android app and wanted you to see it: https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/85970976

Galloway, south west Scotland. Lovely vibe and you'd get a lot of house / space for your money compared to Devon.

Primefungus · 21/09/2023 13:31

Kids aren't all NT (1 waiting for and assessment but noticing issues in others) so unlikely to be taking buses alone. Although eldest learning to drive. We do want to be near town for more options in the future though.

Thanks for suggestions so far!

That budget will really restrict you. A PP suggested Malvern, there's nothing with 5 beds and outside space under 330K, you'd need to be nearer 400k.

It seems to me that unless you have a really good reason for moving, you would be better off staying put. Don’t underestimate the massive upheaval that moving a family it. It’s taken us a year to feel even slightly settled and I still don’t know all the admin things I need to know round here, still need to make a lot of new friends, still need to find better work etc. I wouldn’t move unless you have to!

I was going to say Marsden/Meltham/Holmfirth/Penistone/HD8 villages around Denby Dale in W/S Yorks respectively. All rural, towns/villages but good access to Huddersfield, Manchester, Leeds, Wakefield, Barnsley, Sheffield....

But I don't think you'll get much for your budget anymore.
