Permanent crown looks worse that temporary

I've been to the dentist this morning to have my permanent crown fitted but it looks worse than the temporary! The colour seems all wrong. I've attached photos. I'm going back in four weeks once the gum has settled and I've already told them I'm not happy with the appearance/ colour. To me it stands out like a fake tooth.

The crown is two teeth attached to one implant. I do have crap gums so there has been quite a bit of recession as it has been healing. Further back on the same side I have a bridge and the colour for that seems fine! Why can't they match the new crown? Have they made a mistake?

Should I be looking for them to replace the crown with a better colour match at no extra charge? I've paid 4k+ already.

The crown also has a little pink bit to match the gum but I didn't ask for this and I think it would look better all white/ tooth coloured.

Any advice about what I should ask for or other people's experience welcome.

Last photo is of the temporary crown which was a better colour.

The temporary one looked better more natural shape and perfect match on colour. Don’t be fobbed off go back and say it needs to be remade.

The tooth right next to your front tooth on the permanent crown sticks out at a weird angle/ slightly overlaps your front tooth compared to the temporary where both teeth on the crown seem to fit seamlessly with the overall set of your teeth.

The temporary one looks a lot more natural in shape and colour. Did you see a lab tech to get the colours right or did the dentist do it by holding up a few generic options? I had two lab techs holding up a fan of colours and discussing base towns and highlights like I was in Farrow & Ball or something!

You sound lovely Hmm

Totally agree with the PP who mentioned prevention. I'm always pointing out the state of my teeth to my kids and encouraging them to take responsibility for their dental health.

I had a funny angled canine and overcrowding and the dentist recommended I had it removed and a bridge aged 19 as it would cause problems later on. I did not want drastic treatment at such a young age so I left it. I've no idea if it would have helped, definitely better dental hygiene and dietary factors would have helped.

I called the dentist back and they agree it is not a pleasing end result and they will change it.

I am following @Lotus717 advice 😆 I'm after honest opinions and advice whether presented in a lovely way or not.

I didn't see a lab tech and I don't recall any shade matching by the dentist, the temporary seemed fine so I assumed they knew what they were doing shade wise!

I've had another bridge with the same dentist which has also been fine.

There was nothing wrong with what @Lotus717 said? OP asked for opinions!

Doesn’t sound like you’ve been “fobbed off” though. Such a negative way to approach this!

midnightblue12 · 21/09/2023 20:00

If anything op I would say that perhaps the colour is a little off compared to the front two teeth, however, this would not be something I would've noticed had it not been pointed out and I do think they are very natural looking.
Just like any service, if you're not sure then always best to go back and get some advice. Sometimes soem adjustments and tweaks are needed and that's perfectly normal :)

I would also say though, when having something done/changed, it can take a while to get used to it!

DrFoxtrot · 21/09/2023 20:05

I think PP suggesting 'don't be fobbed off' was encouraging me to try to get the outcome I want rather than I have been fobbed off already.

The dental nurse was lovely when I spoke to her, I'm sure they'll sort it out for me. I'm not looking for absolute perfection, just a more pleasing result, similar to how the temporary looked. It must be possible, given the fact the temporary looked nice!

OP,
You have it spot on. As you have already spent over £4k and the permanent crown is in your mouth the don’t be ‘fobbed off’ was more to say don’t let yourself be talked out of getting it changed by the dentist.
It is genuinely the expression I would and have used with my best friend to try and help her stay strong if she was going to have to sort something out which she really wasn’t happy with but felt uncertain or unsure and where it might be easier to just back down. It was meant to be supportive and strengthen her resolve if she was nervous or apprehensive about trying to get something changed, particularly something she had already paid for.
I think you understood perfectly what I meant and your eyes aren’t deceiving you the temporary looks much better and they should model the remake of your permanent crown on that.
I am really glad that the dental surgery were really helpful when you phoned them and that you are going to get the result you wanted.

cathyandclare · 22/09/2023 11:00

This happened to me and it was an error by the lab. The dentist put the temporary back on and they tweaked the crown and it was much better.

DrFoxtrot · 29/09/2023 13:21

UPDATE - they have changed the permanent crown for something that is a much better match and without the pink bit.

That is a million times better! Glad they got it right in the end OP.

Lovemydaxie · 29/09/2023 16:33

That's so much better, so glad they have sorted it. Looks really natural now.

D20 · 30/09/2023 07:19

Absolutely perfect now @DrFoxtrot

Thanks all, I'm really happy with it now 😊

OP, It looks great now, you did brilliantly getting it sorted.

It’s not like there’s a nationwide supplier! It can be really difficult to get the shade and translucency right, as well as the shape and contours. Colour perception varies hugely amongst humans and a lot of men particularly, are on a scale of colourblindness. There are all sorts of hues and layers which make up a tooth, it’s really not as simple as it might seem from one end of the process.

OP, yes of course the contour can be changed. Just try to work out precisely what your issues are before you go back. That will help. Let the gum settle as well and stop taking selfies. It really won’t help.

This is why dentists bang on so much about prevention and sigh in exasperation when people think extracting everything to get “fake teeth” is the solution to anything. Fake teeth are technically exceptionally intricate for very many reasons.

This is quite patronising, perhaps you didn’t mean it to be. She’s paid thousands for this. The temporary looked better. Crowns are commonplace and I would say most people have knowledge of how they can look and how they can match the color of the existing teeth. I can see why she’s not happy, the pink piece to match her gum does stand out somewhat, and is a design choice they should have mentioned.

I used to work in a dental lab

See if you can visit and get the technician to colour match themselves

It needs more grey / green
