New season out, has anyone started watching?
Im 10 minutes in and want gauge my eyes out.
The whole series is utter shite but the kind that’s such a train wreck you can’t help but watch, but this is a new level of wokeness and while it’s sort of taking the piss out of it, it’s also not. I think the word queer has been used about 24 times in the past 10 minutes to describe every new character. Statistically they cannot ALL be queer so why push it so much?

Anyone else started watching?

Well, you can help watching it. I assume you have free will and a telly with an off switch.

So clearly you have posted because you want a GBeebies style rant about the woke and how it was all so much better in the olden days.

Have fun.

The olden days? I’m in my mid 20s 😂

Clearly not in spirit...

Using the word woke as a pejorative automatically loses you the argument, BTW.

GalileoHumpkins · 21/09/2023 13:09

want gauge my eyes out

That's different.

So you’re going to assume I have the mentality of a boomer because I’d rather watch a program for the comedy instead of it being ‘let’s see how many diverse minorities we can Jam into a 60 minute episode’ ? Okay then.

I absolutely love sex education, it’s my favourite programme. I haven’t watched the new sneak peak yet though. I agree it has become very “woke” but I still really enjoy it.

Xrays · 21/09/2023 13:43

For the record I’m a menopausal 43 year old if we’re judging viewing habits by age…! 🤨😆

BloodandGlitter · 21/09/2023 13:46

"Woke is an adjective derived from African-American Vernacular English (AAVE) meaning "alert to racial prejudice and discrimination". Beginning in the 2010s, it came to encompass a broader awareness of social inequalities such as sexism and LGBT rights."
I guess you prefer not to associate yourself with people who aren't racist or homophobic.

It’s obviously not being used in that way. ‘Woke’ is now commonly used to refer to performative open mindedness that doesn’t have anything to do with opposing genuine oppression and everything to do with being seen to be on the right side with very little meaningful effort, and also often used to scold those whose views are not considered ‘correct’ even when they are in no way racist or homophobic.

allhellcantstopusnow · 21/09/2023 13:53

Turn it off then? I imagine Piers Morgan is on on Sky somewhere, watch that.

I also agree with a PP that using "woke" in the way you have makes me immediately write you off as a Daily Mail reading imbecile.

Almahart · 21/09/2023 14:18

I'm enjoying it, it's hilarious. I could watch Ncuti Gatwa all day long and never get bored.

Just because some people use it that way doesn't mean they get to decide how others use it. Some people use "gay" to mean shit as in "your trainers are gay", does that mean they're in the right and other people can't say "gay" and mean homosexual?

That's not how language works.

Conferenceblues · 21/09/2023 14:34

I’d agree with that. I was responding to PP dictating how OP should use the word. I was pointing out that she was using a common meaning of the word that was very different to how PP said she must be using the word.

MadamWhiteleigh · 21/09/2023 14:36

I haven’t started watching it yet but what you describe is what I’m afraid of. It’s become more concerned with ticking boxes that developing the characters and story.

Summerslimtime · 21/09/2023 14:42

I watched 15 minutes today. I really want to watch it, but probably can't. I do think they are taking the piss out of the college, but it's just too much. "Of course all the toilets are gender neutral", like it's no issue at all etc etc. It's just making me angry so far. And the woman is clearly a lesbian, but that's only ok if she 'changes gender' and 'becomes a man'.

Howtohideasausage · 21/09/2023 14:46

It’s very… pastel coloured. I think it is taking the piss out of itself a bit. I don’t think you’re meant to take it seriously.

readingmakesmehappy · 21/09/2023 14:47

The Guardian review said that even though it's the final series the original characters have been sidelined so that new ones can be introduced, which seems totally pointless to me. Eric is my absolute favourite so any downgrade to his screen time is a no from me (even if it is because he's playing Doctor Who). Cal was super annoying in the last season so I'm not in favour of them getting more screen time either.
The review also said that this means that Gillian Anderson's storyline about PND doesn't get the attention it deserves.

I haven't had the chance yet.. love all previous three seasons though, superb casting

colouringindoors · 25/10/2023 00:25

I really enjoyed the characters and storylines of seasons 1-3. With the exception of Adam's family, s4 feels like its jumped the shark sadly.

TruckDiver · 25/10/2023 00:29

Is this season 4? I got two episodes into season 3 and actually DID gauge one of my eyes out. With only one eye left, I don't think I'd better risk it again.

EmmaDilemma5 · 25/10/2023 00:31

I've watched it all and really enjoyed it!

LittleGlowingOblong · 21/11/2023 20:42

I watched it and didn’t know whether to feel very old and old-fashioned, or just plain incredulous.

A story about sex in high schools and not a single testosterone-fuelled horny borderline sexually-coercive male to be seen. The world must have changed.

cyberbob123 · 12/12/2023 11:44

"I haven’t started watching it yet but what you describe is what I’m afraid of. It’s become more concerned with ticking boxes that developing the characters and story."

(I don't know how to quote properly haha)

This is it exactly. Most people don't get annoyed at gratuitous wokeness because its woke, they get annoyed because its clearly a box ticking exercise to jam in as many diverse characters and plot points in as possible, at the expense of developing the characters and making the settings, interactions and depictions believable and thus relatable.

I also wanted to point out the double standard of Adam's Dad's storyline and the aggressive sexual nature of the female teacher he dates, which is played for laughs. She pushes him down, climbs on top of him, aggressively touches and uses him when he is clearly not enjoying it, feels awkward and is in some physical pain, and yet we're meant to find it amusing...and to top it off then shames him when he cant "perform" saying she wants a "real man".

In a show such as this, where its whole paradigm is about inclusivity, respect etc to portray that scenario the way it did is pretty awful.
