To feel I'm being watched in my local Tesco?

madeinmanc · 21/09/2023 09:13

There's a Tesco Express near me which I go in fairly regularly as it's close.

I know this is going to sound like paranoia but I can't shake the impression that some of the staff are watching me like hawks. They must think I'm a shopfliter.

For example, a few weeks ago I was using the self-service checkout and I saw a woman at the main till have a word with another employee and he came and stood directly behind me (less than 1 m) and proceeded to watch me scan my stuff over my shoulder, practically breathing down my neck, a bit like if you ever had a teacher watching you work at school!! This has also happened one other time before that. I have also noticed they don't do that to anyone else.

They also insist on speaking to me every time I go in, when they don't to other customers. I try and slip in and use the self-service till unnoticed but if the man is at the manned till he will shout out a greeting to me and force me to speak to him. Again, they don't do it with other customers, just me. Even if I try ignoring him, he will repeat it until I reply.

I didn't go in for a while after that, but I did go in last night and the same woman who had told her colleague to watch me at the self-service till gave me the most horrendous look as I was looking at the flowers near the entrance. As it's just a nasty look, there's nothing concrete I can complain about to the management.

It's just bizarre and really upsetting. I've tried to think when this woman's and that man's shifts are so I can avoid encountering them but I never seem to get it right. In any case, that defeats the purpose of having a local convenience store, doesn't it?

Edit: just to add, the only other thing I do that may be slightly unusual is I don't tend to spend that much money, I only buy milk/fruit/yoghurt etc. as their branded goods are very expensive. I can't see why that would make a difference but I'm clutching at straws here.

Anyone else experienced something like this? 😔 What can I do about it? It's really upsetting to me.

Our Tesco express is in a relatively dodgy bit of town. I don't use it often but always get followed by a security guard when I go in there. I just assume it's because I don't go in too often. It doesn't bother me though.
It's much worse for my 18 year old son and his friends who get followed everywhere they go in shops...

madeinmanc · 21/09/2023 10:13

Can anyone who works in retail offer an opinion on whether I should ask management about this?

You should put in a complaint IN WRITING. Give your full name, address, etc as you have nothing to hide and you need to let them know that. One copy to the shop manager and another to the regional or national manager if it's a chain.

Tell them exactly how the staff make you feel. State that you are not and have never been a shoplifter, and that you really resent and feel upset that you are being singled out and treated like a criminal.

Demand an apology in writing or you will never shop there again and advise all your local friends and family and colleagues of how you have been treated.

Autumnleaves257 · 21/09/2023 10:17

I wonder if they have mixed you up with someone else who has shoplifted or who has had suspicious behaviour in the past. No idea how to handle it though other than going to a manned checkout.

madeinmanc · 21/09/2023 09:59

I can't see it going well, they're hardly going to say "Oh yes we did have you down as a shoplifter, but clearly you're not. Sorry about that!", are they? Especially since there could be legal ramifications for Tesco.

Edited

Well actually if there's been a rumour floating around or if they've got you mixed up with someone else, while they might not be able to say it directly to you as to what's been going on in the background, the manager could apologise to you and promise to look into what's going on. It might mean that if they've got evidence of another shoplifter, they can look at that evidence again and realise it wasn't you, and while they won't admit liability to you, it could change how they deal with you and perceive you in the future. So it's worth doing.

It's also possible one of the staff is shoplifting, nearly got caught, blamed you, and another member of staff believed them. The manager really does need to know so they can investigate.

SisterMichaelsHabit · 21/09/2023 10:22

You can usually phone these smaller stores so you don't have to go in. I had an issue with someone being really rude to me at my local Coop and I phoned up the number on the receipt and complained to the manager. They couldn't have been more apologetic.

BlueLaLoo · 21/09/2023 10:25

I've had this in our local Tesco Express. I hate going in there but it's close and the only place open late near where we live. I found it's more obvious when I am shopping with my DD in her buggy rather then when I am by myself.

That said, the same Tesco Express is the only place I've ever had someone attempt to pickpocket me, so they are probably right to be over zealous.

eurochick · 21/09/2023 10:32

I had this for ages in our local Waitrose. Bloody annoying as our family spends about 200 quid a week in there. It was very uncomfortable being followed around the store.

CantThinkOfANameAtAll · 21/09/2023 10:32

Shoplifting is on a huge rise. Everything you are doing, and I mean everything, is screaming out similar behaviour a shoplifter would do to avoid detection.

You have two choices. Go to a different shop, or go to a manned checkout every single time.

In case you hate the mail, just google it it's in all the papers.

Tesco Extra shoppers are asked to show receipts before leaving store

Customers at the Tesco Extra in Shoreham, West Sussex, were held in the shop before leaving while staff checked receipts.

What do you mean "everything I'm doing"? I'm just buying milk in my local Tesco Express.

OP posts:
madeinmanc · 21/09/2023 10:35

If you mean using the self-service till, everyone under 50 does that!

It's like this in my local Tesco.. to the point everyone comments on it

Iliketulips · 21/09/2023 10:42

I wonder if their trying to give you good customer service as they recognise you, ie speaking to you, having someone available on self serve in case they're needed. The looks could be because they're encouraged to 'go the extra mile' constantly and they're feeling stressed.

It's how you are doing it.

Loitering near the doorway. Etc.

It all adds up to shifty body language which they pick up on based on experience of shoplifters. Just go straight to manned tills if you wish to continue to shop there.

Twoscotcheggsandajarofmarmite · 21/09/2023 10:58

Do you pay by card? Could you have accidentally tapped and left and the payment hadn’t gone through?
This has happened with a few customers in our store when I’m sure they had no intention to avoid payment, but I do ask staff to keep an eye on them to make sure it doesn’t happen again.

Olika · 21/09/2023 11:24

Personally next time I was there and this happened, I would ask them/the person, why they are following/checking what I am doing. And I would tell them that if they keep doing it as I haven't done anything to deserve it, I will complain to Tesco about them. Tesco has very responsive customer team that you can reach e.g. via Facebook chat. They helped me few times and I even got a call back from the store manager to discuss his team's failures.

saltnsaucey · 21/09/2023 12:21

Supermarkets seem to specialise in voyeurism now with all the CCTV’s, till cameras and security guards. I just don’t enjoy shopping in them at all all. Maybe they are trying to persuade us all to shop online, so they can phase out their shops, especially the small ‘metro’ type stores?

theemmadilemma · 21/09/2023 12:30

I would personally write into Management yes. Even if they do 'think' you're a shoplifter, they obviously have no proof and the way they are acting is completely overzealous.

drunkpeacock · 21/09/2023 12:43

madeinmanc · 21/09/2023 09:29

Going to a manned till is a good idea, actually, thanks! The only disadvantage is that I don't want to interact with the staff after their creepy/insulting behaviour but if it will put a stop to it...

I get this completely but in reality you've probably now created a vicious circle because you feel uncomfortable. The more you try to slide in unnoticed and avoid staff, the more suspicious you look.

Try killing them with kindness, manned till, bright smile and lots of "have a nice day!" See if their behaviour changes.
If not, report to the manager and then vote with your feet.

LoudAndSqueaky · 21/09/2023 12:52

It be daft to go to another store. Put headphones on and use the manned till and stop agonizing over this.

I've had my shopping checked in stores a couple of times. It doesn't bother me in the slightest. I'm glad when stores are super vigilant. I hate shoplifters with a passion and anything stores can do is fine by me. They need to treat everyone with respect and also with suspicion 😅

I suspect it's because you feel you are being targeted that you are giving out odd vibes.

I very much doubt that only buying a few things like milk or bread is going to seem odd? Why would you think that? It's a Tesco express they are the type of store designed for you to nip into and grab a few things.

I also wonder if your nervousness is what's prompting them ask you for help. Are you sure they are all 'creepy or insulting'?

madeinmanc · 21/09/2023 13:05

I mean, yes I am probably giving off weird vibes now because I literally dread going in there these days 😔

But, as any five year-old would say: "they started it!" 😅

givemushypeasachance · 21/09/2023 13:21

Maybe you look like someone they've caught shoplifting before, or you've been in at the same time as someone was shoplifting and now they suspect you were there causing a diversion or something. Other than confronting them about it all you can really do is ignore it and keep going about your business, not stealing stuff.

madeinmanc · 21/09/2023 13:34

Thanks for the idea but I have a mixed ethnic background and I don't think I look like from most people round here even if it's not obvious that I'm mixed.

That said, this:

Other than confronting them about it all you can really do is ignore it and keep going about your business, not stealing stuff.

is right.

Walk in, stop, and wait for your follower to appear. When they do, make eye contact and say briskly 'morning!, can you please explain to me why you treat me like a master criminal every time I step foot in here? To my knowledge I've not done anything wrong. So either you've got me confused with someone else - I can show you ID to clear that up if you'd like? - or I've done something by accident that I'm not aware of. Which is it please?

Either that or just hand them your basket and say 'come on, milk first!' and walk off Grin

Ionapussy · 21/09/2023 13:47

I'm certain I'm on the 'watch list' for my local waitrose, the old security guard use to hover and was very unsubtle about it. I think it is down to how I use to go in there most days when my dcs were babies and I had a pushchair (a favourite apparatus of shoplifters) but I was in there a lot as I was a bored SAHM and they offered free coffee (!)
