Cheapest way to warm a room wfh

I work from home in an office which has a radiator that doesn’t kick out enough heat for me. The boiler is new and I can’t put in a radiator that is much wider and I don’t want to add a second as the pipes would have to be on display.

The room has patio doors into the garden and curtains which I can draw when it is dark.

But I’m cold. I want some type of heater that isn’t going to cost a fortune. I wear heat holder socks, thermals and wrist warmers but my fingertips go numb and I have to be able to type.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Heated blanket and fingerless gloves

43percentburnt · 22/09/2023 12:09

Plug in blanket purchased - got a lovely furry one and it should arrive next week.

I wear fingerless gloves and a hat (unless I’m on zoom).

I need to change the rug on my floor, I may get a thick one and maybe some furry boots. I looked at UGG ones but can anyone suggest any cheaper yet similar ones as I’ll be wearing indoors only.

Another vote for a heated throw. I use one from Lakeland, I find even having it over my knees is enough to heat me up. It is great for WFH.

I’d do slipper boots not Uggs (which were originally slippers), they’re cheaper and less bulky.

I have a pair of Aldi Lambskin boots.

They're special buys so only available in middle aisle at random times but have a lookout, they are so warm and only £20.

Last year I bought slipper boots from Primark for me and my DD. Fleece lined and so cosy and about £8 a pair. They have them this year too in tan and black. They look like short Uggs with a rubber sole and fluffy fleece.

TheFormidableMrsC · 22/09/2023 23:45

To add, Next do some really good Ugg boot dupes in real suede that are reasonable.

jellycat · 22/09/2023 23:51

I use a hot water bottle with a good thick cover (Boots usually have good ones). I have it on my lap, with a blanket over the top. Then just lots of layers, and on my feet, Morlands Ayr slippers https://www.morlandssheepskin.co.uk/ladies-slippers/ayr?colourID=859 which are lovely and warm.

Ayr

Luxury Ladies Sheepskin Slippers from the company that introduced sheepskin slippers to the UK. Our slippers are the ideal gift, Luxurious, pampering and cosy sheepskin slippers.

Best advice I ever received from mumsnet was to always wear a scarf when WFH makes a huge difference to have a warm neck!

Although this was many years ago when scarfs were fashionable and pre all the stuff you can now as a result of mass WFH and the energy crisis, but worth adding to the list of things to try.

HedgehogB · 23/09/2023 00:50

I have a very cheap to run heated foot pad thing that I got off Amazon. It plus into the mains socket. I work in a garden room that’s pretty chilly and had the same issues as OP but since having this even my cold hands have recovered.

HedgehogB · 23/09/2023 00:54

Here it is - utter godsend

My son has a super thick Sherpa that he loves when he's cold!

AskNotForWhomTheBellCurves · 23/09/2023 02:17

You can buy heated fingerless gloves, I think. I have Raynaud's so get freezing hands too and if I was still in the UK I'd definitely invest in a pair!

BerfyTigot · 23/09/2023 04:51

@43percentburnt just to let you know that Raynaud's can be treated with Nifedipine.
Otherwise I use a heated throw from Lakeland which is lovely. Martin Lewis recommends heating yourself rather than the room.

43percentburnt · 23/09/2023 06:17

Lots of ideas here thank you.
I am hoping to be warmer than last year! I have realised I move around a lot (when not needing a screen in front of me). I have a lovely warm scarf that was a gift but not my colour so I’ll try that too. It’s huge and very wide and soft.

That foot pad looks good too and I think I’ll get the gloves this weekend.

It’s just miserable being cold - I am definitely in the wrong country😂

Another vote for a heated throw, I now have 2 in different rooms, I only had the heating on twice last winter.

It's a question of 'heat the person not the room' so hot drinks are also useful, make up a flask in the morning if you do not want to keep boiling the kettle.

Mine are washable.

LuckOfTheDrawer · 23/09/2023 09:52

I feel the cold a lot.

I wear Ugg boots as slippers (I've never worn them outside). They were expensive, but I've had them for years and foresee them lasting for many more.

I've also got an electric heated Beurer pad thing - I usually sit with it around my back. I've had a heated throw in the past, but I found it relatively bulky / restrictive.

OMGitsnotgood · 23/09/2023 09:58

I bought a couple of thermal long sleeve tops and thermal socks from M&S for a winter break. They were amazing and you could wear the top under a blouse for work calls.

madeinmanc · 23/09/2023 10:04

Not sure if you might have discounted this idea already but I live in a very cold house and find cotton hooded tops are the warmest, not polyester or cotton mix, very heavy cotton ones. I had one from Superdry last year. The hooded part is important for keeping warm, it makes a huge difference vs. sweaters without the hood.

MrsJBaptiste · 23/09/2023 10:17

To be honest, I just can't get kn with heated throws/blankets. They're constantly falling off when I'm typing then need pulling out of the way when on a Teams call... a real faff.

I was sick of putting the heating on and heating the whole house when I just wanted to heat the room I was working in. An oil filled plug in radiator is a game changer! Just heats the room you're in and as mine is under my desk, I can wrap my legs around it to feel nice and warm. I just have to remember to switch it on at 7am ready ready for an 8am start!

SheilaFentiman · 23/09/2023 10:24

If you have an oil filled radiator, you can cycle it on and off. It stays warm
for quite a while

HenryCavillsWife · 23/09/2023 10:46

I pinned blankets to the inside of our curtains last winter and it really helped keep the heat in the house. But only when the curtains are closed, obviously!

In your situation, I'd use a heated throw and a hat. Hats are SO WARM.

BellaTheDarkOverlord · 23/09/2023 11:43

I recommend a snood. Just something fleecy and warm to cover your neck which is an area which doesn’t get covered much. I’m wearing a fluffy jumper today which a high fluffy neck. Keeping my neck warm us definitely keeping me warm.

I’ll be looking for stuff like a desk heater for dh as he works from home and it’s getting colder now. I bought him slipper boots from Bedroom Athletics. He loves them and is on his second pair now.

Cranberriesandtea · 23/09/2023 16:31

I got a £15 quartz heater off eBay that I put under my desk and it's an absolute god send, pennies to use and I don't have to be wrapped up feeling like the Michelin man.

@jellycat I frickin love hot water bottles but you know it was costing me about £3 a day boiling the kettle for them!!! I was shocked
