How many miles left in the tank when you fill your car up?

For me, I normally fill up with around 50 miles left. Curious to see what others do. And what’s the lowest you’ve ever risked taking it? I think I’d start sweating it had anything less than 20 miles left, but my dad regularly takes his lower!

This is my worst job, putting fuel in the tank. I run it to 0! Then fill it up to the top.

It always takes about 40litres when I fill.

Actually on checking my car holds 46 litres. So I'm actually not as low as it's telling me. And apparently 6 litres can give you approx 30-50 miles.

Which explains why I haven't run out before. Actually wish I didn't know that as it will mean I will stretch it even further.

PinkRoses1245 · 20/09/2023 14:47

About 50 miles. If I am passing a garage with good prices or you get points, like Tesco, I might top up sooner.

mondaytosunday · 20/09/2023 14:51

Depends - usually wait til about 100 as I supposedly had 45 once and ran out! Luckily within sight of a petrol station. But if I've got a journey coming up amd am passing by a station I fill up.

cocksstrideintheevening · 20/09/2023 14:53

We got down to zero once as we pulled off the paeage in France into a patrol station. It was during the strikes and there was just no fuel. It was a very tense few hours.

So now I get a bit twitchy once it goes below 50

Cotswoldbee · 20/09/2023 14:56

For general day to day running around we fill up when it goes under half (about 200-miles remaining).
When on a trip we let it go lower and just fill up either when at the destination or want a break.
We always get fuel at the end of a journey, saves having to factor in time for filling up when you may be in a rush to go somewhere. With our MH that may mean it is sat on the driveway with a full tank for a couple of weeks (or more) but convenience is key.

I try and fill it up when it dips below half a tank - it's a long detour to the nearest petrol station and none of them are 24 hour, so it's impossible to get fuel in a hurry!

You're burning more fuel than necessary! Always carrying half a tank of fuel will burn more as liquid is bloody heavy! That's why the first half of your tank always seems to go down quicker.

PennywisePoundFoolish · 20/09/2023 15:01

I'm a 50 miles person, ran on fumes once only for 2 petrol stations to have zero and I was sweating. Some of you are clearly wild adrenaline junkies Shock

likeafireworkshow · 20/09/2023 15:03

70 because my car is a liar.

afaloren · 20/09/2023 15:04

Mine alerts me when I hit 50 miles and I fill it up then.

cherryassam · 20/09/2023 15:04

50 miles here too. I like knowing I can do an emergency run and back to my parents (20 miles away) at any time of the day/night without running out.

MargaretThursday · 20/09/2023 15:05

Depends on where I'm driving the next day but I normally charge the car when it's under 50 miles.
It beeps irritatingly at under 30 and goes into eco+ mode, which is like driving in limp mode at under 20.

Phos · 20/09/2023 15:05

Mine pings at me at about 40 but sometimes it gets down to 20 before I go out of my way to go to the petrol station. It got down to 5 once and DH was not happy with me.

JamieJ93 · 20/09/2023 15:06

Well 0 😳 though I have been good with my new 73 and at least didn't let it go below 10. 🤔

WellPlaced · 20/09/2023 15:07

Old knackered runaround - usually 5 miles.
New Tesla - I charge at about 20%

Azaeleasinbloom · 20/09/2023 15:07

I have a couple of 100 mile round trips each week, so I fill up when it’s between 1/2 and 1/4 dull - that’s somewhere below 220 miles and above 120 miles.

I travel in rural areas and petrol stations are far apart and very expensive, so I take my chances when I am near a couple of more reasonably priced ones.

Stopped using supermarket fuel - I get better mileage with proprietary fuels and it works out about the same cost.

TeenDivided · 20/09/2023 15:21

100 -120. The light comes on at 80 miles to go, I get stressed if I get down to the light.

Sleepyhead88 · 20/09/2023 15:27

I read somewhere that you shouldn’t let it go too low and should fill up when the light comes on as there is muck in the bottom of your tank. I used to run on fumes, I just liked to see how many miles I could get on a tank of fuel.

Gingerninja4 · 20/09/2023 15:27

I don't let mine get below half a tank normally fill when between half andn3/4; ( not sure in miles )

Part reason is never know when my son will need hospital trip ( complex medical issues ) ,my mum living 8 hrs away and finally fact that half a tank in mime is around £90 ish

DogInATent · 20/09/2023 15:29

Depends, if I know one of us will be doing a lot of driving in the next couple of days I'll fill up if the tank's less than half-full and it's convenient. Otherwise it'll get run down to the last couple of bars on the display - I try not to run it down to point the blinkenlampen and the pips remind me.

Always carrying half a tank of fuel will burn more as liquid is bloody heavy
Half a tank (about 35l) of petrol is c.22kg or diesel c.25.5kg. It's not making a lot of difference to fuel economy - less difference than driving out of your way to save a penny a litre on the fuel price.

ScarletWitchM · 20/09/2023 15:33

i wait until about 10 miles unless I know I have a long journey and will fill it up even if it’s halfway. I have a hybrid so if it’s too low I drive slow!!

goingtotown · 20/09/2023 15:34

Since the fuel shortage 100.

bellsbuss · 20/09/2023 15:36

DH goes mad at me for always playing petrol roulette as he calls it. Just hate filling it up , I love it when he fills my car for me so I don't have to

PuttingDownRoots · 20/09/2023 15:38

I 0nce had 2 miles left... it was after DH had had an accident and I back and forwards to the hospital several times a day around the children and not anywhere near the petrol station.

DH has his work commute perfected... its exactly 95% of the tank!

Loafbeginsat60 · 20/09/2023 17:05

Somewhere in between 1/4 tank and fuel light on. Don't like the light to come on as I live quite a way from a petrol station

God I hate filling up!!
