Interview advice

I’m interviewing for some positions in my team and one external candidate has been a red flag. They were referred by another colleague. This individual has been very vocal about the interview process and chasing members of the team constantly for updates. I suspect they will be one of those difficult people to manage going by pre interview behaviour! However I have a feeling they will do well in the interview having intel from their referral friend. I will be fair and objective but I don’t want this person joining. How do I manage this if the person scores well / above others?

If they score the best in the interview system in use in your organisation then you’ll have to appoint them. Otherwise you’ve got an unfair recruitment process

Then the person will have to be properly managed

ask the right questions at interview!!!

eg when have you had to deal with a difficult situation, what did you do, why was it difficult, what was the outcome, what would you do differently.

give scenarios and ask how they would handle the situation and judge their answer based on the steps they undertook to resolve.

probe their answers, ask they to expand, change the scenario part way through, eg throw them a curved ball.

they may have a slight advantage in terms of knowledge of the company via their friends, but they can't change their personality.

this is something you should do for everyone you interview, so you find the right person.
