What strikes me in all of this is just how popular RB was, until 3 days ago.
Has anyone been to see him, and did you find him funny? Watching clips of his shows, it seems clear how awful he is, but the audience love it.
There must be a fair number of people on mn who did.

Matthew Morgan is denying all knowledge of any impropriety, which having listened to that radio clip I find hard to swallow.

Thanks for the replies, everyone. It's interesting to hear from a range of voices.
I've never liked him, and the clips of him that are being played on the radio sound repellent and not funny at all.

The clips being played are carefully chosen to add fuel to the fire, in reality he does actually joke about many things, not just sex. He's very observant and can make almost any situation funny.

ReformedWaywardTeen · 23/09/2023 14:16

Yes in the early 2000s/Myspace era. Think it may even have been sponsored by myspace.

He was funny. Quite crude. But then there was a lot of comedy even at that point that with time we now know isn't acceptable.

I admit I did fancy him at the time. I'm now appalled. I definitely followed him on Myspace.

He did take particular interest in one audience member but she reciprocated.

I have found him sadder over the years, like he couldn't get over it not being that era anymore or that he wasn't cool really anymore. He was a millennial era fave, the next gen just find him slightly misogynistic I suppose. DD watched the doc with me and was appalled I'd ever found him funny, let alone that I fancied him years ago. She said comedy like his is just anti women and women as sex objects and nothing more. Like it smacked of him thinking women don't have the right to be intelligent.

I totally stand by the women who bravely come forward. And I hope they get justice.

He's just Del Boy with a Thesaurus. How baroque eh? Bonnet de douche RB, mange tout.

I am sure one of his stand up routines was about a threesome with another male which I think was Matthew Morgan. But cannot recall exactly?

vincettenoir · 23/09/2023 21:43

Yes it was MM who was in the threesome story. That clip of MM being flippant about the indecent exposure was hard to listen to. I think that he was very aware of RB’s unpredictable behaviour. That is clear from their dynamic and how much he brought him back to earth.

Although I very much doubt he knew about any of allegations uncovered in the investigation it was probably not a stretch for him to believe any of it. He is probably as gutted as a lot of other people about learning the extent to which RB pushed women’s boundaries.

Yes, long time ago at the height of his fame. He was very shouty and kept gazing into the audience with wide eyes which I found odd.

Did the thing where he invited girls backstage but to be fair Jimmy Carr did the same thing, but he said “if anyone wants to come and say hello after” so less sleazy. I was far more offended by Carr than Brand, couldn’t believe the stuff he casually said and I’m not easily shocked - you do know what you’re getting with Carr, but even so.

Also met Brand’s Mum a couple of times through a mutual acquaintance. Lovely, genuine woman, so warm and friendly. I hope she’s ok.

His mum died a couple of years ago @dayswithaY

Boomboom22 · 24/09/2023 00:31

Yes in 2007. He did openly recruit people to have sex with after. He also used a Muslim girls phone to call her dad on stage although she said no and said he was fucking her.

dayswithaY · 24/09/2023 00:32

I didn’t know that Lemmein Well it was about 10-12 years ago that I met her. Thanks for telling me.

Pumpernickel101 · 24/09/2023 07:03

@dayswithaY Russell’s mum is alive.

dayswithaY · 24/09/2023 09:07

@Pumpernickel101 @lemmein Hope she’s not reading this then. It’s one thing to find out your son’s a rapist but to then find out you’re dead? 😬

How bizarre! I was sure she died and that's why he cancelled the show I had tickets to - maybe it was when she had a car crash and my brain just assumed the rest? Blush

Sorry Mrs Brand!

dayswithaY · 24/09/2023 21:57

@lemmein Mandela Effect?

LunaNorth · 24/09/2023 22:42

I thought she died a couple of years ago, too.

Davros · 24/09/2023 22:58

I saw him at the Regent's Park Open Air Theatre around 2018. I enjoyed it a lot

I agree, I've cried tears of laughter at some of his stuff, particularly the newspaper bit of his stand up, or ponderland where he would discuss clips of other tv shows. I don't think his comedy really translates to radio because he's more of a physical comedian, and a lot of the little throwaway comments will relate to something earlier in the set. It's a shame how he turned out to be, because he really did used to be funny.

Mothership4two · 25/09/2023 04:25

That's what I thought when I watched the Dispatches programme. A lot of old footage of his jokes taken out of context to illustrate his negative behaviour. Also many clips of him wild eyed or staring maybe to indicate he was intense or scary.

I'm not defending him but I did feel uncomfortable in the way he was shown - as though to push their narrative. Investigative journalism should be clear and unbiased IMO.

I suppose it depends what you find funny. We all have different tastes, just imagine if only one style of humour was allowed, and it was Micheal McIntyre. 😱 It doesn't bear thinking about.

Maybe in context they were?
