DD has just indicated she might like a bass guitar for her 18th to teach herself (she plays classical guitar). Anyone here got any tips / recommendations how to choose? Thanks

Try to go to a music shop if possible. My DD is learning but just got one from a friend so no idea on brands etc. It's a lovely birthday present idea. You'll need to factor in leads and an amp too.

It depends really how much you are thinking about spending!

Musicman / sterling are very good but expensive.

Fender do some lovely bass guitars. I have a short scale mustang (because I have tiny hands and struggle with a full size bass).

Squier is cheaper generally but aren't bad at all for the price.

I would probably go for a 4 string if she is just starting to learn to play rather than 5 / 6.

Short scale mustang player here too

id say fender or squier, get her to try a short scale and a normal to see what she’s comfortable with but short has been a revelation to me. Should have switched 20 years ago.

Thank you both. Yes I'm beginning to realise it will be impossible to get one for her without her trying it. Fender P looks great but yes probably above budget once you add in amp and other bits. Good to know Squier is not bad for the money.
