What do you eat instead of bread? (not to do with gluten issues)

I've realised recently that although I've been brought up eating in a reasonably healthy way, actually it's not that healthy or good for energy. My default for easy meals is bread.....so toast for breakfast, sandwich for lunch, beans or eggs on toast for a quick dinner.

All this bread does (I think) make me feel pretty sluggish, esp as it's supermarket bread which I now realise is full of weird chemicals!

So, please help me out, what do those of you that eat more healthily eat instead of bread? Do you genuinely have things in to make a salad and enjoy it? What do you eat with soup? Or eggs? What should I have I'm my fridge or cupboard instead?

I've now got a young child and beginning to realise the patterns and habits I get them into will likely influence how they eat!

I’ve stopped eating bread in last six months as I’ve gone GF and I don’t miss it at all as it made me feel ill. for breakfast I eat yogurt/fruit/nuts seeds, or eggs bacon & baked beans & tomatoes. Just no toast. For lunch I’ll have salad with ham cheese or reheat dinner leftovers like chilli & rice. My friend had a ham salad sandwich so I had the same just no bread & bit extra ham & salad. Or I’ll add Nairn cheese oat biscuits.

Cherryana · 19/09/2023 20:50

I eat rice cakes with a topping often.

I do like pumpernickel bread which I don’t think has the same effect as regular bread.

Other than that it’s jacket potatoes, quinoa, rice etc with a protein for lunch.

Allthestories · 19/09/2023 20:53

I used to be the same. Now i have porridge or greek yogurt with fruit for breakfast and salad with eggs/cold meat/cheese/fish for lunch. Lunches took a bit of getting used to but it's a habit now. Sometimes reheat last night's dinner too. I've been aiming to go zero uhp food and 30 plants a week (apparently it includes spices and coffee so not that hard,it just makes me try harder with variety)

I'm trying to limit the bread I eat, just because I find it really fattening. For breakfast I have muesli that has lots of nuts, seeds and dried fruit. It's only Sainsbury's own at £2.60 a pack and I find it very filling. For lunches this week I've made veg soup with lentils and curried cauliflower soup with chickpeas. They're both filling enough without bread.

DH is coeliac and eats oatcakes and a lot of rice. He also likes rice noodles but I don't like the texture.

AvengedQuince · 19/09/2023 20:55

I buy the crosta and mollica wraps sometimes which are made with flour, olive oil and salt, sometimes a supermarket bakery sourdough (more ingredients but not as bad as the sandwich bread), sometimes I don't have bread.

I eat eggs with mushrooms, tomatoes and avocado. I make soup thick and eat it on its own. I eat cheese or tinned fish with salad. I eat porridge.

samlovesdilys · 19/09/2023 20:57

I have cereal for breakfast (fruit n fibre with banana), then yoghurt and fruit for lunch. Try to only have bread at weekends though Friday breakfast is sometimes tough!!

Summer2424 · 19/09/2023 20:57

Hi @GreenBirdy
I eat Sainsbury's wholemeal sourdough bread, i find it's a healthy bread, i have a couple of slices in the morning.

declutteringmymind · 19/09/2023 21:04

Not all bread is bad.

I've cut down considerably but do enjoy warburtons 21 seeds and the Croats
And mollica
Toasting bread.

BigSwigs · 19/09/2023 21:04

I stick to one slice of toast with eggs for breakfast (sourdough or Bertinet seeded). If I do have bread at lunch (I don't often as usually make a protein bowl - tuna, chicken etc. with quinoa, or blackbeans, chickpeas, puy lentils, wholewheat pasta) I'll have a wrap (Crosta Mollica, no nasties). Would love to make my own flat breads. I don't have bread in the evening really. Bread isn't bad, it's just trying to find natural ingredients and make sure it doesn't crowd out diversity in the diet, and that it's consumed with fats and protein to avoid spikes in blood sugar.

ringmybe11 · 19/09/2023 21:05

Porridge for breakfast, soup for lunch with an apple and a yogurt. An easy tea would be omlette or chicken salad or something. I eat bread at the weekends for a treat but wouldn't find it that hard to leave it out of my diet.

BigSwigs · 19/09/2023 21:06

There is Facebook group called Reducing UPF that has posts on different breads that don't have emulsifiers etc.

PinkRoses1245 · 19/09/2023 21:06

We don’t eat much bread - yoghurt and fruit for breakfast, soup or salad for lunch. Sometimes have crackers or breadsticks.

Switchingoff · 19/09/2023 21:08

Rice cakes, corn thins, lentil cakes (obsessed with the kallo beetroot ones!). If you don’t need to cut out all bready things totally you could have a couple of crackers or some croutons. I do love crisps in with soup though 🤣

Also more potato so eg add new potatoes to salads or have alongside things in some form

I make most of our own bread, totally natural and not bad for you. Flatbreads are really easy, google Hugh Fearnley whittingstall river cottage flatbread recipe, it's just flour, salt, small dribble of olive oil and water😋

MonumentalLentil · 19/09/2023 21:22

Almond bread. Made with almond flour. Nothing like what we know as bread.
Lots of recipes on Google although probably listed as low carb/keto and can be made in a few minutes.

I also make soda bread with spelt flour and a bit of wholemeal to lighten it, not wheat free but not full of chemicls and palm oil like the supermarket stuff. Also doesn't take long as it doesn't need to be left to prove.

saltnsaucey · 19/09/2023 21:23

Pitta bread?

katepilar · 19/09/2023 21:28

British bread is a disgrace. If you want a healthy variant, you need a sourdough rye bread which is almost impossible to source in the UK, or was when I wanted it. Supermarket edition is also full of chemicals, and yeast.

Soup - on its own. Salad - on its own.

SophiaElise · 19/09/2023 21:29

I very rarely eat bread - I just eat more of everything else! So instead of bread + one scrambled egg, I'd scramble two eggs. Instead of chicken sandwich, I'd eat chicken salad with more chicken than I'd have used in the sandwich etc etc.

Vettrianofan · 19/09/2023 21:33

Porridge oats with blueberries for supper.

mibbelucieachwell · 19/09/2023 21:33

Oatcakes

Ryvita

Buckwheat crackers

Quinoa

NailyDale · 19/09/2023 21:34

Rice and eggs

Same, I just eat more of whatever minus the bread.

Or instead of poached eggs on toast, I'll have the eggs with avocado.
Or eggs with chips, or egg and bacon.
I do some lovely pasta salads. Rice salads too.
I do love crusty white bread, sadly it does not love me. I've got used to seeded bread, but it'll never compensate. So I've almost quit eating all bread. And not lost a single pound in weight.

teddybearsbear · 19/09/2023 21:51

Ryvita are my go to for most things now so loaded with toppings or on the side of breakfast or with scrambled eggs beans etc for evenings

I decided to cut down bread like you at the beginning of the year and on the rare occasion I have it now I really feel it! It's amazing how sluggish and uncomfortable it makes me

Thighdentitycrisis · 19/09/2023 22:06

I stopped eating bread and also trying to replace it with substitutions like oat cakes/ rice cakes etc. I found it really helpful to change my eating habits

I have coffee for breakfast, as I’m not hungry first thing. A banana about mid morning if I get peckish. Lunch is cold snacks, I take carrot sticks, cubed cheese, nuts, fruit, boiled eggs. Evening meals are usually veg and protein with pulses. Lots of avocados.

Handcreamqueen · 19/09/2023 22:14

I eat the co-op sourdough for breakfast as they come up very small slices and I toast them. For lunch I’ll usually have a salad and some form
of protein.
I have eaten like this for ages but I still crave bread, I think I always will as I adore bread but sadly my digestive issues don’t!
