Applying for a job... WWYD?

Wasn't sure where to post this so apologies if this is the wrong place.

I've seen a job on Indeed that I might apply for. I've been in my current job for years so have never used a jobs board before. The advert says who the employer is. The nature of the job I'm interested in (and my experience/background) is one where first impressions count. It's a kind of role/application where you'd want to stand out from the rest from the off as that is who you'd expect to be in the post too.

As such, I'm tempted to contact the employer direct with a punchy cover email and my CV. Like we used to do back in the day! I've created an Indeed account but so far the application process makes me feel meh... other than my CV, it's all going to be pretty generic by having to tick the Indeed boxes and enter basic info. I can supply all that info but in a more personal way by going direct.

Do you think it would be okay to apply direct? As I said, that first impression counts in my line of work but I realise that could go one way or the other with a prospective employer. They might love it, they might not! What would you do?

Is it a large company where there's a recruitment team? If so then I probably wouldn't, if it's a small company or they've put the hiring manager contact details then maybe but it can be abit marmite, some love it some prefer people follow the process

Also you can upload a cover letter with Indeed

TheMindfulMum · 19/09/2023 18:25

Thank you. I didn't know I could upload a letter.

It's a small company from what I can tell online, no recruitment team and this is a new role. Hence I want to impress as I think (totally my interpretation!) the applications might go straight to the person/people I'd report into...

Is the job advertised on the company website? If so that should give you details on how they expect you to apply.

Eta - many moons ago when I was doing this there was an option to contact the organisation but we'd send out an application form, either paper or email, so all applications were standard whether they came from us or a recruitment site. If you'd sent me a CV I'd have sent you an application form. If you didn't complete that, you wouldn't be considered.

No I think they're that small, it's not even advertised on their website.

I think as already said, it's a real marmite one, no right or wrong but perhaps if they've thrown money at their problem (by paying for an indeed advert?) they want to make that cost worthwhile and will only follow indeed replies...

So bit of an update and further question. I applied via Indeed. When I completed the application however it said 214 other applicants had been made 😲😲😲 I then knee jerked and emailed my application with cover letter to the company's email address. The application did state to do this but didn't quote an email address so I found it on their website. Who knows if that was right or wrong of me.

Anyway, regardless of that as what's done is done, for those who are more experienced with the Indeed process, I'm left wondering if that statistic is accurate? 214 for one job 😲 Really?!

Can applications be automated on Indeed where CVs are automatically posted when a job ad goes live? Sorry, I don't have the right lingo as I've not applied for a job on Indeed before, but I'm left wondering have 214 other people actually submitted an application like I did? Or has a bot taken over with some of those?
