Why are teenage boys allergic to jackets?

It is heaving it down in Glasgow this morning, really heavy rain and forecast to be wet all day. Just walked home after dropping car at garage for a service, passing hundreds of teens on their way to the local high school.

So many boys in just a sweatshirt. No jacket, no umbrella. Few girls similar to be fair but most girls in at least a coat/jacket with hood up. Boys seem to have a real aversion to wearing a jacket and would prefer to sit all morning in wet clothes.

It's just odd.

My daughter seems to the only child who wears a coat most of the year round. NE of England. Coats are for wimps. Just look at the toon on a Saturday night and you won’t see any coats when the snow is falling!! Girls seem as bad as the boys. Bits often playing football though so probably get hot. Maybe lose them when they put them down as goal posts.

This is so true

I have 4 boys
they don’t feel the cold apparently they do have jackets

These mad coat rules must be an English thing? I've never hear of that in Scotland? What's going on? Same with all the mad uniform rules. We do have school uniform rules in Scotland but they're definitely not as rigid as some of the stuff I read about on here!

I’m thinking they don’t want to carry it around all day. My daughters high school (also in glasgow) don’t let them wear a jacket indoors but they aren’t given anywhere to put it.

To be honest I rarely wear a coat either (although I am not in Scotland - probably a bit more chilly up there). When out I am either on a bus, on a train or tube, in and out of shops etc or walking between bus/train stops and shops etc.
I am always hot and bothered 🥵

Tbh I think it varies a lot from one area to the next.
More like a fashion thing.

dc secondary, they all have a jacket in winter 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️ but I’ve seen before girls in light school jumper, ballerina shoes and a (short) skirt whilst snowing

When left to their own devices?
dc2 was mentioning today he felt warm and should take his shirts back out if tte cupboard. I’m cold and thinking if putting the heating on.
But this summer… we were away, it was HOT (30~35oC) and he had jeans on and was listening to music under the duvet Shock

When I was a boy we HAD to wear a blazer collar and tie all day at school regardless of temperature. Once only, when it hit 93 degrees F (30 something C) did our headmaster allow us to take them off.

As a result outside school we hated wearing a coat or jacket and would only do so under extreme pressure. Rain and cold was not "extreme pressure" for this purpose.

Are your bus services anything like ours, where from 7.30 - 8.15am, it's so full of teenagers from multiple schools that one half breathe in whilst the other half shout? The heat in a full, every inch covered in standing bus is stifling.

No kid wants to be the one that faints.

OnlyTheBravest · 19/09/2023 20:38

No chance of mine wearing a coat to school but they did wear hoodies that were confiscated on a regular basis. It was a cool little rebellion and one battle I refused to fight.
The trend that makes no senses is huge puffers during summer 25+ days. I know they think they look well hard but honestly they make me feel hot just looking at them.

We very rarely wore a coat at school. We just couldn't be bothered carrying it around. A brolly was fine it it rained. Blazer (optional) and scarf if it was really cold/snowing.

My question is why are mums obsessed with foisting coats on teens, who can easily live with the consequences if there are any?

Because I don't want them to sit all day in soaking wet uniform. Nor do I want a pile of clothes to dry when they get home when it's easily avoided. Yes, I could delegate it but the outcome would be a stinky bag of wet clothes unearthed a week later.

My kids chose their own waterproofs but if I ask them to wear them, you'd think I suggested they cut off their arm. Even the ubiquitous North Face jacket can't be worn in rain.I thought I'd cracked it with a nice oddballs umbrella but it's still lying forlornly in the box two years later.

The forecast for today is heavy rain so off we go again. They have two lockers at school so there's no excuse.

Well.....when I was at school they didnt wear them because it wasn't cool and most of them wore their own 'designer' brand jumpers or hoodie which they didnt want covered up by a jacket. They wanted to others to see what they were wearing and labels.
I'm pretty sure the reason still stands.

All of those designer hoodies are now being worn by me, so thank you boy mums, from a girl mum!
