Wisdom teeth extraction pain

Good morning

I had all 4 wisdom teeth extracted on Wednesday — it was not a complicated removal and I was told I could return to work the next day granted I do nothing overly physical.

It turned out I needed Thursday, Friday and today off work! Last week because of how sore my mouth was, but today because of how sensitive my mouth felt last night — it was like my gums/teeth were being electrocuted! I'm guessing it is from the trauma rather than traditional sensitivity as it does not hurt at all to drink or eat. It isn't what I would call painful but it is extremely uncomfortable, enough to keep me awake most the night. I only seem to have this feeling at night, during the day it is not there.

The holes where my teeth used to be are still sore during the day but OTC painkillers shadow almost all the pain, although one of my extraction holes hurt when I swallow, so swallowing is unpleasant!

I also have a nasty taste in my mouth which seems to be coming from the holes. I don't think I have dry socket as I'm not in agony (I am really scared of dry socket). I also don't think I have an infection as I have no heat or throbbing anywhere. I used to be prone to painful infections on my wisdom teeth where the teeth hadn't fully erupted from the gum and it doesn't feel like that.

If you have experienced similar wisdom teeth extraction I would love to hear when everything felt normal again and/or if you had to return to the dentist. Any tips on how to handle the lighting feeling at night would also be great! I need to return to work tomorrow.

Feeling miserable.

I had it and it was agony for days after. Just the one removed but it had a curved root so was a bastard to get out in one piece. Keep swilling your mouth with warm salt water, it really does help. I had the same horrible taste too. It took I think 2 weeks to fully heal up.

Wisdom teeth removal are horrid especially if impacted. Keep salt water gargles up and hopefully yours doesn’t last as long as mine
if your teeth were impacted then that pain is far worse

I had all mine out at once when I was 18 and it knocked hell out of me! It was a good couple of weeks till I was back to normal

I remember going to my pre op (had it done under GA) and the nurse saying 'how much time off have you arranged?' and I said 'ohh I'll take my laptop home and wfh the day after' and she, kindly, laughed in my face 😂 I too needed about a week off. Partly because I was so groggy from the GA, and also because I was so swollen. The nasty taste I remember, pretty sure that's a bit normal 🤔 I went to the dentist at about 4 weeks post op I think for a check up, as everything was generally feeling okay. You have my sympathy though, it was grim.

Mine were also impacted so I believe they had to remove a couple of small bits of bone for access 🤢

I recently had some molars out and went back to the dentist a week later because I wasn't sure if I had an infection or not. One of the first questions he asked was about the nasty taste. If you're concerned, go back and get them to just check. Mine gave me precautionary antibiotics as it just wasn't feeling right. But it's been a few months and it's almost fully healed.

This fills me with dread. My DD is due to have all four out soon and the bottom two are horizontally impacted. She doesn't like swallowing painkiller tablets at the best of times (would rather take liquid Calpol), and she's going to be in so much pain, poor thing 😢

Deedoo · 19/09/2023 09:03

@CornishGem1975 did you have pain for 2 months after removal

Deedoo · 19/09/2023 09:05

@TicTacNicNak she will heal and recover a lot quicker as she’s young. Oral surgeons are experts she’s in good hands x

WildFeathers · 19/09/2023 09:06

i had mine taken out under general anaesthetic in hospital. A couple were impacted. It was really painful for about a week and then suddenly got a lot better. That first week was awful though. Hope you’re feeling better very soon.
