Can I clean my spectacles with washing up liquid or will it strip off the transition layer?

Away from home and forgot my little wipes for glasses. They're so smudged and driving me nuts, what can I safely use that won't wreck the transition thing and anti glare coating?

Clean tissue and huff on them

People recommended washing up liquid during covid to stop glasses steaming up but this was not good advice, you shouldnt use washing up liquid on them

Mrsjayy · 18/09/2023 08:32

I wash mine with a little bit of washing up liquid I don't think they were harmed if a wipe doesn't take the transition film off a bit of soapywater won't.

Mrsjayy · 18/09/2023 08:34

Oh the Internet says not to use soapy/hot water yeah don't do that 🙄 just give them a wipe.

I worked in an opticians for years, the technician always cleaned the specs with soapy water made from washing up liquid.

I use soapy water with washing up liquid. Have always. I have all the coatings and my glasses seem fine.

cocksstrideintheevening · 18/09/2023 08:40

My brothers make glasses for Specsavers. They use washing up liquid.

Resentful2023 · 18/09/2023 09:29

Best way to wash them. Rinse under warm water first to rinse away any tiny particles. Use a tiny drop of dish soap to clean with your fingers (not just the glass, the whole thing). Dry with a lint free cloth (tea towel is perfect). Since doing this I haven't got a single scratch. Rubbing with a cloth causes scratches because you're rubbing the grit around on the glass. The smears and oil from fingers don't get properly removed without a proper cleaner.

I always just use plain water and dry on a towel. The wipes always give me a skin reaction. I've been doing this nightly for 20+ years.

I have my specs made up at a place that services all the opticians in the area. They advise cleaning with a lot of warm water and a tiny drop of washing up liquid.
