Britain's drink problem correcting itself?

I'm in my 30s had a varied life and lived all over the country, served in the military etc etc.. Drink has always been a big part of things.

"Getting hammered.."
"Friday Saturday night yay!"
"Coming down for sesh?!"
"having a few pints down the pub"
"watching the game (few pints obv)"

I've given up booze for the most part, i'll only drink on holiday abroad now

I've witnessed pubs close down in my local towns and villages for the last decade and it's still continuing. The people who frequent what is left are basically old men, some down and out dole types on universal credit, and people on disability spending their allowances. Elderly day drinkers are dying off and nobody is replacing them.

The young people that i work with (hospitality) are not really into it either, the lads are into gaming and going to the gym, and the girls are saving up to "go traveling"

There does seem to be some research out there appearing in main stream media suggesting younger people are drinking less - so I don't think it just a MN myth.

Plus as more venues close ones who do drink have less choice of where to go so probably concentrates them a bit more - plus there will always be some who drink as much as previous generations.

I think there will be many reasons for it - and some like drugs may not actually be postive ones.

Why Gen Zers are growing up sober curious

A complex combination of outside pressures and information overload is driving young people to snub alcohol, far more than generations before them.

Nope, people are drinking at home instead of pubs. Just look at your local convenience store or supermarket on Friday or Saturday. There'll be people with trolley loads of booze, especially in Summer for BBQs, outdoor parties, etc. Just been to our village convenience store for my lunchtime meal deal - woman in front bought two bottles of vodka - that's a Monday lunchtime!

My son has just moved into a flat overlooking a playing field. Come Sunday morning, the field is littered with empty bottles and cans - lager, vodka, cider, etc - and that's a "respectable" area with low crime rates, little social/council housing - the field is where all the local "youth" hang out in the evenings.

My son doesn't drink much at all (maybe a couple of cans of lager each week), doesn't go out partying, etc., and he was shocked at his Uni flat mates who were spending huge amounts of cash on buying booze at the supermarkets every week to drink in the flat (and taking to other flats for parties etc). Every time we went to pick him up for holidays, we were aghast at the kitchens - spirits/cocktail bottles literally everywhere - all over the worksurfaces and piles of empties in the recycling bin and a huge bag of them next to the bin.

So, no, I don't think the drink problem is "correcting itself" at all. It's just moved away from pubs/clubs and into homes instead.

One of our young ones loves partying and going to the gym.

People drink at home more.

We've started going to festivals and people drink a lot.

😂You don't know what you are talking about to be honest.

I don't know where you live but the trendy bars are still full of trendy people.

The comment about people on disability is disgusting.

Good for you but why do you drink abroad?
