Please suggest books for DS7?

DS, 7 years old is a very avid reader and reads by himself early mornings (rises annoyingly early) and then an hour at bedtime. He also reads on journeys (car train bus tube plane)

He’s devoured all the Diary of a Wimpy Kid books over and over and over. A year ago devoured all Horrid Henries over and over.

What next?

His teacher tried to get him hooked to Tom Gates at the end of year 2 this summer but he didn’t like it.

Also tried Malory Towers but isn’t fussed. Loved some famous fives but not at the huge rate he rates Wimpy Kid.

I think it does need to have teen/tween heroes and kids adventures.

Any suggestions?

Depending on reading level...
Roman Mysteries series
Adventures on Trains
Earlier Harry Potters
Mr Penguin (although the protagonist is a penguin not human!)

Dick King Smith books for older children eg The Sheep Pig, Dragon Boy, Tumbleweed

Diana Wynne Jones ones for younger readers - she’s AMAZING

Roald Dahl obviously - Matilda, BFG etc

Horrible Histories books are fab

Anne Fine is brilliant

Honestly though there is nothing like taking him to the library and letting him take out things and try them without having to pay. Gives him a real chance to see what he likes.

Has he tried beast quest? There's loads of them and my son enlist them.

Judy Blume’s Diaries of a Fourth Grade Nothing, Superfudge series

About a boy who gets an unexpected little brother (and eventually a sister of I remember right!?) I loved them as a child and am getting them for my DS6 for Christmas

Mr Gum.series

Very funny.... we ended up getting the audio books read by the author Andy Stanton and we can all recite chunks of the books they have been read and listened to so often!

Combusting · 17/09/2023 20:04

Wow making copious notes for birthday and Christmas.

Reading level: very advanced in technique, pace and comprehension. Subject matter/book type still would prefer school kids/kids adventures rather than more grown up stuff.

Harry Potter very good shout actually.

we use library lots which is how wimpy Kid happened… will look for the ones you suggest here

We are also reading the Worst Witch books just now which DS enjoys but obv it is set in a girls’ school and there are very few male characters.

Actually thinking about it he’s very into the Diary style of book…..

My son enjoyed the Percy Jackson books a lot at that age. Roald Dhal is quite good too.

Newuser75 · 17/09/2023 20:09

The storey treehouse series, Timmy failure, horrible histories, the first few Harry Potter, mr gum series.

CrabbyCat · 17/09/2023 20:09

DS is 8. The Mr Penguin books by Alex Smith were a hit about a year ago, as were the Nothing to See Here hotels books by Steven Butler. We've also just had the first Bunny and Monkey book out the library (Jamie Smart) after a recommendation, which went down well enough I've requested the rest of them. The Bear Grylls Adventure series also kept him quiet for a couple of weeks.

UnalliterativeGeorge · 17/09/2023 20:10

13 storey treehouse, anything by Tom Fletcher - DS especially loves the danger gang and space band

And how to train your dragon

3WildOnes · 17/09/2023 20:12

Mr Gum
13th story tree house
Dog Man
Captain underpants
Harry Potter
Roald Dahl
Narnia
Secret 7

catsnore · 17/09/2023 20:13

How to Train Your Dragon - there's loads and they are very funny.

David Walliams would probably appeal too.

Simonjt · 17/09/2023 20:15

The last firefox is great, there is a sequel due out soon.

AdaColeman · 17/09/2023 20:29

All the Swallows and Amazon books, I think he will especially like Dick, a very clever, inventive boy.

Ihaveaskedyouthrice · 17/09/2023 20:48

My DD is 8 and also an avid reader and loved wimpy kid. She also likes investigators, dog man, David Walliams, Roald Dahl and the treehouse series. Her current favorites though are Beano comics and old annuals as we got a load of them from charity shops and she reads them over and over. She gets very excited every week getting the newest copy.

timtam23 · 17/09/2023 21:08

Small Change for Stuart by Lissa Evans
The Train to Impossible Places by PG Bell
Little Badman and the Invasion of the Killer Aunties by Henry White & Humza Arshad

If he's an advanced reader he may be ok with these at age 7
