Emergency tax code

Hi all,

my new work place didn’t send the paper work on time and still have not so im most likely going to get emergency tax on pay.

I told them I need to it sorted out asap as I need the money for mortgage payment.

I’m not sure how quick they will sort it out. They seem to be very slow.

any advice on what I can do? Shall I call HMRC myself? Would I be able to pass on the details myself using info from p45?

thanks

Yes I did this - called Hmrc who sorted it. Be prepared to be on hold for a while though!

@Elderflower2016 thank you so much. I will give them a call. Will they be able to fix it so i get full pay at the end of the month?

I had to phone HMRC last week due to tax code issue. After waiting a while on hold they were very helpful

Anyway the jist was that it would take 7-10 days after phone call for my employer to receive the coding so depending when the payroll date is it could be sorted for that month

@Oldraver thanks for that. can you tell me which number you called please? I don’t want to end up calling the wrong number. Hopefully I get through and it gets sorted out. I’m going to call on monday and pay is at end the of the month.

Ring HMRC, they'll send it through to your employer who will apply the new tax code for the next available payroll,

Sent what paperwork to whom?

I thought all tax stuff was done online nowadays, the employer inputs your info into the payroll system that communicates directly with HMRC

Coffeeeeeee · 16/09/2023 20:52

@VisionsOfSplendour yes it said employer to send details over. I cant seem to update it myself. Its not allowing me

The ‘emergency’ tax code is the one most people are on anyway so unless your actual tax code is much higher you won’t be out of pocket . If your actual tax code is lower than standard don’t spend the extra you will get whilst on the emergency/standard code

Your new employer wouldn’t be sending any paperwork. Have you given them your P45? They should be imputing that onto your record, but they can do this any time up until they finalise the payroll.

information will also come through from HMRC about your previous earnings, which relies on your previous employer having filed their pay information on time.
