Who is at fault here? (Minor car bump)

I was reversing out of a car parking space in a supermarket earlier so obviously going extremely slow, looking in my mirrors as I did and I wasn’t distracted in any way. Parking sensors didn’t go off at all until there was suddenly one very long BEEEEEEP and a bang simultaneously. First thought was I’d hit someone somehow so I was absolutely terrified but thankfully hadn’t, I’d bumped into someone’s car.

She was basically turning the corner to enter the car park and I was parked in the corner spot next to the entrance / exit. I did not see her in my mirrors and my parking sensors had no idea she was there until I’d already gone into her. It was split second stuff but I’m imagining she must have been going too fast around the corner? Got her details and gave her mine, she was extremely irate swearing and shouting at me. No damage to my car at all but I have a big car, hers had a small dent to the rear door.

Who is realistically at fault here? I doubt the supermarket CCTV will cover it since it was the furthest spot from the shop and I’m sure they usually tend to just cover the shop entrance/exit? May be wrong though!

@paradoxically2
I understand what you're saying but in this case, the damage sustained to the other car is on the rear door, so OP must be at fault.

You sadly. Although insurance might go 50/50 to make it easier. 99% of the time I reverse in, I find it so stressful reversing out as so much more difficult to see.

SoupDragon · 16/09/2023 21:30

You reversed into her rear door without having seen the whole front section of her car...?

Cupcakekiller · 16/09/2023 22:05

You can't rely on your parking censors.

You...sorry.

Always reverse into car park spaces. I never understand why people reverse out. It's dangerous.

Because full bags of shopping are heavy and I need to be able to lift the shopping straight from the trolley into the boot. The supermarket is the one place I never reverse park.

Floralnomad · 16/09/2023 22:18

@FionnulaTheCooler perhaps take more bags and put less in them

For everyone saying reverse in, did you miss where due said she was at the supermarket.
Unless I you are all shopping at aldi then you ain't getting a hessian bag between the cars without scratching never mind a trolley.

Maybe it's a problem if you have mobility issues but I park my trolley at the front end of my car then carry them to the boot. I never park nose and it's never an issue.

Sometimes if a car has parked next to my car without giving me any space at all I'll pop the shopping in the front seat but that almost never happens.

It's much safer to reverse park in.

Yep, your responsibility op. If it makes you feel better I did similar to a stationary car. AND I have a reversing camera. 🙈 It sounds like similar positioning. I was coming out backwards and a car had turned into the lane of the car park I was reversing into though it was quite a bit away which was why I had already moved. Even though it had stopped to let me out I was conscious of it and was trying to move quickly to get out of its way. I subsequently ended up knocking the car in the space behind. Because of its positioning it didn’t come into vision on the camera until last minute and the same with the sensors. My car was unscathed and theirs had a small scrape on it the very corner of the bumper. Luckily that’s all. However I’ve stopped using the camera now as I didn’t realise how much better it is without.

jlpth · 16/09/2023 22:59

Although it was your fault (because your car was reversed into the side of her car), she should have seen you reversing, stopped and avoided the accident.

Dragonsandcats · 16/09/2023 23:02

usually fault of reversing party. I always reverse in unless there is a drive through spot.

Lucyintheskywithadiamond · 16/09/2023 23:31

You were at fault as you were reversing. She drove in to a car park, she was not negligent at all. If the position of the car park space made it impossible for you to see if any cars were coming round a blind corner you should not have made the manoeuvre.

BibbleandSqwauk · 17/09/2023 09:26

@Lucyintheskywithadiamond so should she have just stayed there forever? There's a road near me with a hedge that overgrows making visibility v v difficult even moving forward. I edge out v slowly, as oncoming traffic will be able to see me fine, well before I can view the road, but technically I would be in the wrong of course if we collided. Physical reality doesn't always match theory.

I can’t open my boot if I reverse in…. So that’s why
