Eggs use by date

Looking for opinions on if I can use these eggs.

Just spotted I have 11 eggs with use by date of today. I'm making cake and cupcakes for tomorrow. Can I use these eggs if I bake today?

It will just be family eating them for DS birthday. Would anyone get sick/poisoned from the eggs being a day past use by?

No. I would use the floating test - put them all in a bowl of water. Fresh eggs sink, too old eggs float.

SomethingNastyInTheBallPool · 16/09/2023 07:04

Eggs usually last much longer than their best before date - like, weeks. As PP suggests, do the float test before adding them to the mix. As long as they’re not off, they’re fine to use.

They'll be fine.

I do the float test for eggs and use them until they actually go off.

Setyoufree · 16/09/2023 07:06

You can still eat them well into the coming week. Nothing will happen to them at midnight tonight!

MidnightOnceMore · 16/09/2023 07:07

I would crack them one by one into a bowl to check but eggs often last long after the date especially if stored in the fridge.

GrazingSheep · 16/09/2023 07:08

Last week I used eggs with a date of 11th July. All was fine.

BooAutumniscoming · 16/09/2023 07:13

Thanks I have never heard of this before!

Thanks I have never heard of this before!

You haven't heard of eating food after the use by date?

hamsterballs · 16/09/2023 07:13

Beat before dates and use by dates are different.

The floating test isn't recommended.

But if you cook them before the use by date, they will be ok

PinkRoses1245 · 16/09/2023 07:14

I hope you’re joking, of course theyr fine. The use by dates is such a scam, they should remove them entirely and people use their common sense

Wallywobbles · 16/09/2023 07:14

Normally eggs last for ages due to the double shell. we have chickens & DH won't bring the eggs in until we've eaten through what's inside. They can easily be a month old. Just break into a cup before using.

BooAutumniscoming · 16/09/2023 07:14

@Setyoufree good point 😂😂 I suppose I am always iffy about use by dates and find stuff smells the day before use by date.

OP posts:
Wallywobbles · 16/09/2023 07:15

Food should smell!

hollyblueivy · 16/09/2023 07:15

I'll use an egg two weeks out of date

BooAutumniscoming · 16/09/2023 07:16

@VisionsOfSplendour I meant the floating egg test. The quote function isn't working for me. I was quoting the first post but it didn't come through.

They're definitely fine. Some of the eggs on my bench right now are use by 25th August. Someone up thread said don't use the float test, can I ask why? I've always found it reliable.

I hate best before dates. Someone I used to know through work binned everything as soon as it got to the date. They'd be given loads of chocolates for Christmas but then bin loads of it come April or whenever the best before was. When they told me I nearly cried, so much waste, chocolate waste!

They were baffled when I said chocolate would not go off like that. I asked them to bring any out of date chocolate to me next time but I never got any 😂

sorrynotathome · 16/09/2023 07:23

If you haven’t kept them in the fridge they should be absolutely fine. Like others I use eggs well after their date. But if you’ve kept them in the fridge they go off quicker, so crack them individually to check.

watcherintherye · 16/09/2023 07:28

The floating test isn't recommended.

For what reason? It seems to be fairly commonplace advice for eggs. If they lie on their sides at the bottom of a pan/bowlful of water, they’re at their best, upright but in contact with the bottom, they’re still edible but past their best, and floating eggs you ditch!

hamsterballs · 16/09/2023 07:35

This is where I got that information from

KleineDracheKokosnuss · 16/09/2023 07:37

That’ll be fine. We ignore use by dates entirely. Crack them and see if they look/smell ok. Float test does give you an indication as well.
