Ill try to include as much info in my opening post as I can..

I was driving my DC to scouts just now and it's a long straight road. Up ahead on the pavement on my side, I saw a loose dog, it was obvious that it didn't have anyone with it, I assume it's got out without the owners knowledge.

It looked like a XL bully, but I don't know, it was possibly a bit small maybe. Like a large staffy.

I slowed down as a precaution, it's a good job I did because it spotted the woman across the road with her dog (actual staffy from what I could see) and darted into the road in front of me, the car coming towards me swerved and missed the dog and me by inches.

It went straight for the woman's dog. She was around 60 years old and she looked terrified as she dragged her dog away and was backing herself into a bush. I immediately pulled over to help but I realised I had DC in the car, I didn't want them to see me mauled so I just froze. I didn't know what to do.

I drove away once the guy in the car behind me jumped out.

I feel shaken and cowardly. I did call the police on my hands free as I drove on but I feel like I could have help more.

That woman looked so so scared.

I'm not sure if I'm being stupid to feel like this and the media has caused the fear or if it was OK to react the way I did.

If the other an hadn't stopped, I guess you should have grabbed something heavy from the car and hit the dog hard. But I fully recognise that it's only too easy to say that in hindsight.

The footage of that 10 year old being attacked the other day showed three adults hitting the dog with things in an attempt to get it off the boy, and it achieved basically nothing.

The dog was attacking the other dog, no way would I put myself in the middle of that.

Totally OK OP. Children with you, unknown possibly viscous dog on the loose, someone else trying to help and you phoned police.
You did everything right IMHO.
Hope you're OK, you must be shaken. 💐

A very sticky situation with a viscous dog on the loose.

If a dog that powerful turned on you it could have given you live changing injuries or worse. Anyone who dives in to help in these situations has my upmost respect and admiration. I couldn't do it.

Utmost. The word is utmost.

Blackbyrd · 15/09/2023 20:10

@AvocadotoastORahouse , don't trivialise the OP's concern with your bullshit corrections. We all know perfectly well what those two posters meant

Livelovebehappy · 15/09/2023 20:38

Op, you’re scaremongering suggesting that the dog may have been an XL bully breed, when the reality is it could have been any breed. You say yourself you’re not really sure. Weirdly, there are a lot of social media posts today about people coming across out of control XL bully dogs randomly attacking people. Where are all these dogs suddenly coming from? It sounds like people are trying to portray some sort of invasion is taking place. I have a very docile whippet and have to say that on my twice daily walks, sometimes far away from where I live, I’ve yet to see one of these breed of dogs.

Here you go. Dogs hould be muzzled at all times.

I have always thought this. It has nothing to do with these attacks.

I'm still reeling thinking about that poor man ripped apart by two xl bullies yesterday. I feel so so sick about it. Yet the fucking scum that own these dogs are signing petitions to save the bastard things.

I was just talking about it with my husband. To actually be discussing what would be the most horrific suffering - a child or adult and he said he would rather be savaged to death by one rather than two because you would be being pulled apart by two dogs 🥺 that poor poor man suffered so much and people are signing shitty petitions to save the fucking things.

My mum is in her 60s with a little dog. I've told her to carry a foldable pen knife and I am confident she will use it if necessary.

DESTROY THEM ALL 🙏🙏🙏🙏

Edited

I heard of people who are carrying folding knives in case one of these brutes comes for them or their dog- but to be honest- you won't stand a chance to get it out of your bag and unfold it, as an attack happens so fast, and these dogs are immensely strong.

I had a terrifying incident with a nasty XL bully that spotted my gentle small dog and my friends dog- I called them to me and put them on leads and got behind a metal gate, and held it closed, but the brute got through the fencing on the side of the gate-

I had to release my terrified dogs -I truly thought mine would be killed as the bastard was homing in on her-My friend's dog scarpered.

I grabbed the brute's collar and it dragged me down steps and across stone ground- its female owner was USELESS.

I was badly bruised, and my arms and hands were wrenched by holding on to the thing...have a broken finger.
I was lucky it didn't turn on me-

Look how this brute of a dog attacks a little boy playing outside his house- how four adults are hitting it, and how it isn't staying away, but clinging to the poor boy..these are not nice dogs.

''Nanny dogs'' my Arse. This looks to be a smaller type, but look how tenacious it is.

Well aren't YOU the lucky one.

''I'm alright, Jack'' while others have to live in fear from the monsters around them.
Even in 'Millionaire' zones, there are thug dogs, because of the proximity of poor areas to rich areas , especially in cities.

A thin skinned Whippet wouldn't stand a chance if one of these got hold of it.

Don't be so bloody smug. Others have been injured protecting their pets from these brutes.

LadyGAgain · 16/09/2023 07:40

I was outside my kids school before the summer break and the father of one of the children arrived with a huge muscle breed (don't know which one). He is a tiny tiny man and this dog was walking him as 750 primary school kids were leaving school. I took my children and walked the perimeter of the school (inside their boundaries) and left via another exit. Not a chance was I risking that. He has never brought the dog again. Daft beyond all belief.

Good for you? Maybe you live in a naice, rich area so don’t have to worry.
Smuggity smug smug.

Thatcat · 16/09/2023 08:07

As experts have said in the news, it’s not how these dogs are bred that makes the aggressive, it’s their care and training. The breed just makes them strong. You can have so called XL bullies who are sweet as pie and wouldn’t hurt a fly.

As for the aggressive ones, these poor things are abused from the time of being a puppy. They are used in fighting rings or as tools for intimidation in gangs, and they anre trained so that the only time they’ll see other dogs or humans is to fight them. That’s what they have been viciously trained to do by evil people. Blame the scum who train them not the breed.

Devilsmommy · 16/09/2023 08:15

You protected yourself for your child, that's more important than if the woman's dog gets mauled. It's awful to feel that helpless but your actions were definitely the right ones

Silverdogblue · 16/09/2023 08:15

Welcometotheocbitch · 15/09/2023 19:36

You did the right thing you had your kids with you. The poor lady I hope her and her dog are ok. Is there a local FB group or anything, someone might have posted an update. I’m scared of these dogs I do hope some real change is brought about, I’m not too sure it will though.

Yes, get a mawk on at Facebook. Give the frothers more to get their beaks into. Not like OP actually had anything to do with what might not have been an incident.

Whatswhatwhichiswhich · 16/09/2023 08:37

So did the dog actually attack? Because the way you make it sound the dog crossed the road, went up to the woman and then nothing happened. You froze, if the dog had attacked you’d have seen it, it wouldn’t have waited for you to carry on your way.

If OP is correct that another passer-by got out of his car to go and help, then obviously enough happened to get his attention. Most people wouldn't stop their car for a dog just barking, for example.

I'm sure thats true however surely no one is in denial that these breeds attract a particular type of person who then train them? They are quite a common sight in some areas of London and I can honestly say I'm yet to see an 80 year old walking along with one, same as I haven't seen a local drug dealer walking a poodle. That is the issue for me, most dog owners are as frightened of these as the OP has expressed.

I feel the same .
