Waking at night

...for an hour or two every night at around 2 or 3am. I've always fallen asleep easily and slept deeply.

I've experienced stress and depression recently, but that is not new.

Anyone else dealt with this? How did you overcome it?

I've been experiencing that most of the nights. I've tried everything, changing mattress, white noise, reduced screen time, melatonin, and still not working.

I've talked to my doctor and he mentioned stress. But didn't recommended anything in particular. :(

Still in the same battle, if you find anything, please let me know.

Thanks for your reply Yuki, and sorry to hear you are struggling with it too. Someone on Reddit suggested a teaspoon of Almond Butter butter before bedtime and this received a positive response. I haven't tried it yet as it is not something I buy, but Peanut Butter is meant to work similarly and I have some of that so will give it a try tonight as I am feeling the cumulative effects of the ongoing disruption.

I use the headspace app to play a sleepcast, if I wake in night they have an sos meditation to play which helps me get back to sleep. Hope you find something that works for you x

Cortisol peaks at 3am. If you have high stress levels that could be causing you to wake.

you need to bring your overall stress down. Mindfulness/meditation might help.

I could set a watch by my 3am waking ☹️ I can usually fall asleep easily but I wake up again at 1am, then I’m wide awake at 3am for a couple of hours and get about half an hours sleep before I wake up for work at 5.30am. It’s driving me insane. I’m so sleep deprived I feel like crying. That’s interesting about the cortisol levels and could explain a lot.

TeeBee · 15/09/2023 21:16

Oooh, I'm 4am and usually don't manage to get back to sleep. Welcome to the insomnia club.

I know it’s hard but try not to lie awake worrying that you aren’t sleeping and that you have to get up in X amount of hours, how will you function etc. I read on here once a Mum telling her DC who couldn’t sleep that they need to rest their body even if they can’t sleep which I thought was very good advice, As a chronic insomniac I understand how awful it is and that you become absolutely obsessed with sleep but you will sleep eventually and for as long as your body needs you to.

The cortisol link makes sense, but like I said this is definitely not the first time I'm feeling stressed and low so am unsure why it should have this effect on this sleep this time.

Will try again with the peanut butter tonight as I stayed up much later than sensible after taking it.

I started with this in perimenopause. I found taking magnesium and stopping drinking alcohol helped massively.

Peanuts are legumes not nuts. You can’t replace almonds with peanut.

Apparently almonds are not nuts either; I think what is important is their properties and their effect, rather than their label.
