Could the Dr have messed up my prescription? I am SO sick, please help!

I have been in hospital off and on all week and have had a really horrendous experience and been diagnosed with a bad infection of my bronchioles in my lungs. I was sent home this morning after being given another anti biotic plus amoxycillin. So I have been told to take 500mg of amoxycillin three times a day plus 200 mg of doxycycline with both the doxy pills to be taken at once in the morning (despite the box saying to take two a day spaced out). That seems like a lot?

I have always tolerated anti biotics fine but after the doxy one I have become so unwell, being sick, cramps, cannot keep anything down. The being sick hurts so badly with the lung infection I have and I feel like I'm suffocating. I'm supposed to take more amoxycillin tonight but I cannot stop being sick.

Is it possible the Dr has made a mistake with the dosages? Their plans and diagnosis changed every time I spoke to them and my discharge felt very rushed and I almost walked out with my cannula still in. They've left no follow up number for the ward and my GP is closed.

I just don't know what to do. I was in A&E for 12 hours on Wednesday I can't go back in especially when I can't stay off the toilet and OOH and A&E have been merged at my local hospital. I'm honestly sicker now than I was before I got treated.

Advice please!

The Dr told me two in the morning for five days but the label says something different and I didn't notice until I was already home. The label still says 2 a day but to space them out. I've tried calling the ward but no answer, so no real idea what to do over the weekend. I can't be this sick but I don't want the infection to gain ground.

You should take the medicine exactly as it says on the dispensing label.

I had a similar experience was vomiting every 10 minutes for hours and ended up in a&e via walk in centre. They put me on anti sickness and changed the antibiotics was ok after that. If you can’t keep the tablets down they won’t work, if it’s just vomiting a few times and feeling awful but they are staying down then try eating before you take them and drinking a full glass of water with them too. Hope you get it sorted and feel better soon still remember now how awful it was I’m actually nervous if I have to take antibiotics now.

Doxycycline is most commonly used at 200mg on day 1 then 100mg per day but can definitely be used at 200mg daily so I don’t think anyone online can safely comment on your medication. I’d suggest calling 111 and asking for advice

It's normally two as a loading dose, so first day take one twelve hours apart, then one a day for the remainder of the course. I've taken Doxycycline many times as I have asthma/Copd, and am prone to chest infections, and they are very effective.

Purpleavocado · 15/09/2023 21:41

I sometimes take doxy for perioral dermatitis- 1 tablet daily with dinner. I can't take it on an empty stomach.

WetBandits · 15/09/2023 21:44

I issue doxycycline to patients several times a day and the first thing I tell them about their medication is that it is quite horrible to take, but is the most effective treatment for the infection they have. Doxycycline dosage and frequency varies depending on the infection, so the 100mg twice daily that I issue for chlamydia may differ from the treatment you’ve been prescribed for bronchiolitis; I would double check the dispensing label with the pharmacist who dispensed it if you are unsure (the advice leaflet will offer generic dosing advice, but the dispensing label is what has been prescribed for you)

The BNF suggests 200mg once daily for a severe infection, so it may well be the correct dose for the infection you have.

Some general advice re doxycycline: Never take on an empty stomach (always with food and a full pint of water), avoid sun exposure, don’t lie down for an hour (the advice leaflet says 30 mins but I always recommend a full hour)

Doxy is fucking ravaging antibiotic never felt so ill in my life on pills like I did on this one

It worked though

Also got thrush afterwards so be aware

Rolypops · 15/09/2023 21:49

I didn't get given it by a pharmacist the Dr gave it to me at discharge and no one answers when I call the ward. I imagine if it's prescribed this way that my infection is pretty bad then so I don't think stopping it all together is the best option :(

I just think taking it with amoxycillin as well isn't helping wonder why they've told me to continue to take both.

When you get through to the ward it's probably worth asking them for an anti sickness injection.

tt9 · 15/09/2023 22:54

usually each ward will have multiple numbers, ask the Switchboard to try all the numbers for that ward. they will eventually pick up. avoid calling between and 7am and 9am and 7pm and 9pm as its handover/ward round time.

Ihatewinding · 15/09/2023 23:17

Depending on severity of infection hospitals can give two antibiotics to help tackle the infection better and potentially cover more bugs this way so more effective.
Sounds like you were pretty poorly so this may be their tactic. Did you get a discharge letter?
But again if the vomiting doesn't respond to the measures recommended with regards to the Doxycycline, and you can't keep your antibiotics down, then you need anti sickness meds and if that doesn't work then intravenous antibiotics.

Well the coughing has definitely died down so I'm going to cling on to that as a sign I'm on the mend even if I feel horrendous.

Oh god Rolypops that's not good, saw your other thread, can't believe the stress you've had since!

Hope you're on the mend soon, glad the coughing has died down

Mickz · 16/09/2023 01:40

Possible you could have picked up a tummy bug from the hospital and the timing was just a coincidence? Hope you feel better soon. Xx

legalseagull · 16/09/2023 19:10

Doxy' was given to me when I had pneumonia. Instant violent and continuous vomiting. Get well soon op

legalseagull · 16/09/2023 19:11

I also had to stop breastfeeding as i was told it could make my babies teeth grow through brown. Nasty drug.

pythongreenporsche · 16/09/2023 19:23

Doxy is a strong one. I always feel worse when taking it than not for the first few days

Qilin · 16/09/2023 19:55

I've recently had pneumonia and had three different antibiotics to try and get rid of it.

The Doxycycline was the one that made me physically sick, with stomach pains. Was horrible.

Rolypops · 16/09/2023 23:20

I've followed the advice on the label today and am tolerating it a bit better. Not vomiting though still can't stay off the toilet and am completely exhausted. I'm so surprised by how many of you have said you are currently suffering with lung infections/pneumonia at the moment too. I wonder if covid has anything to do with it as I had a horrible case of it in February and now this, I've never had anything wrong with my chest before.
