Do you believe in psychics?

I’ve been having a hard time recently, had counselling and various other things.

Although I don’t think I believe in the after life there is a part of me that wants to believe.

A friend recommended a psychic / medium lady who is close by and isn’t very expensive. I’m tempted to give a go, at this point there’s nothing to loose. But I have always thought of them as a scam however if they have a placebo affect and make people feel better maybe it’s something to try?

Has anyone ever been to one of these readings, what’s your feedback?

They are never accurate.

Beamur · 15/09/2023 14:13

No.
One example. My friends sister went to see a psychic after their mother died. Mum died of cancer. Message from the other side was to not worry, they wouldn't get cancer.
Both sisters have recently had cancer.
Psychics are best misguided and worst just charlatans.

I think it's a load of bollocks but I have no evidence to prove I am 'right' any more than they do...

Not me but my Mum. The woman she saw did know things she could not possibly know, this was well before any form of social media.

I would go with an open mind and not expect anything.

Paintingonthewall12 · 15/09/2023 14:26

i have a few friends who really truly believe and I really don’t. As I said I want to believe (as most people do it’s nice to think this isn’t just it).

i am tempted to go more just to see what they even do and what they suggest. It’s got to be 10 different things and only 2/3 relate to you but that’s what people grasp onto.

How would a psychic help with the "hard time" you've been having lately? Would you be looking for something like words of comfort from a recently deceased relative or friend. Or is it more you're at a crossroads in life and want some reassurance about the direction you should choose - should you change jobs, will you find happiness again after a breakup, that kind of thing?

If it's the latter you'd be better off talking with a life coach as at least they're honest about the fact that it's just a chat and some non-judgemental objective advice, rather than exactly that couched in the terms of it being from a spirit guide or supernatural source.

PuttingDownRoots · 15/09/2023 15:16

I had a wierd experience with one.
Didn't know anything about me(not an appointment or anything just a random encounter). Didnt know my then fiance in anyway, they never met. g. But told me I would move to a country beginning with G shortly.

Two days later, my fiances job moved abroad. He hadn't even been hinted at...just called into office one morning.

CheerfulYank · 15/09/2023 15:18

I believe a little bit in almost everything, depending on the day.

I believe in God and the after life, but not psychics.

sayhellototheworld · 15/09/2023 16:47

I believe there are people who have some sort of "gift" in this topic, but they don't use them to make money.

TheShellBeach · 15/09/2023 16:50

They're absolute charlatans who prey on people who are bereaved and depressed.
I think they should be outlawed.

Huwipulotu · 15/09/2023 16:52

It’s utter shite. Don’t waste your money.

Nagado · 15/09/2023 17:02

I went through a phase many, many years ago where I spent an extortionate amount on these. Fortunately I’ve now realised that they’re just good (or not so good) at picking up on things.

I would definitely pay money for a cold reading from Derren Brown though, just to see how much I was giving away without realising.

Gall10 · 15/09/2023 17:02

When one tells me next weeks winning lottery numbers….then I’ll believe.

Many years ago I went with a friend to a psychic reader who didn't charge but the custom was to leave the princely sum of £1 on the side before you left.
I was only a teenager and had no questions I needed to be answered so left the direction up to her . I knew nothing much about the family members who had passed on so had to remember the names and details she told me. When I gave the information to my Mum she was amazed at how many personal details were right. These were names of people I didnt know by the way.Just bits and bobs that I recall -like one persons fondness for their rose garden and anothers bad back problems. She did tell me some odd bits about my own future which did come true but its hard to decide if that was just wish fulfilment.

More recently I went with friends to an open circle at a spiritualist church. None of us had any idea of what to expect. If pressed we were probably thinking it would be like one of those TV programmes with an audience and the speaker pointing to a person to give them messages from beyond- or something like that anyway.
Turned out to be a lot more intimate than that with a guided session which directed us to imagine a scene and to relate what we each saw. The leader then spoke to each of us in turn and gave us some feedback. Mine was that my 'problem ' in my chest area ( he rubbed his own chest to indicate the area) would be over and done with by the end of October. This was in July. I took little notice of this as I dont have problems with my chest/heart/ lungs so passed over it.
I only remembered it again as I was being driven home from the hospital after my 2nd mastectomy on 20th October that year. No further treatment necessary .

Just to add that there was no charge for this - not even a charge for the proffered cup of tea.

But what gets me is, why don't they ever know the full name or word?

Why can't they ever say "I've got Granny Alice and Grandad Bill here. They say your Joey is doing really well at his football, you all will soon move from 1, Wood lane.." (and how do dead people know the future anyway?)

Genuinely curious.

@givemushypeasachance not at a cross roads but it’s good advice. Mine more spiritual concern with TFMR.

Edited

There are any number of members of my family, male and female who had roses in their garden. Same with a bad back. If someone had rubbed their chest at me I did have a period of reflux recently. This is the generic stuff they thrive on.
