Hi I have a child who has to dress up as his favourite book character and he said he wanted to dress up as Harry Potter. My only concern about this is it is not much different to his uniform now and just wonder whether some of the older kids will make fun of him for basically still wearing his uniform on a non school uniform day and whether he should wear something different.

As long as he’s got some Potter accessories to make it clear - glasses, painted scar, wand, cloak or scarf etc - I think it will be totally fine.

There will be many many other kids also dressed as Harry Potter!

Gently, I'd suggest that your DC will find life easier to navigate successfully if you focus on helping them to respond appropriately to their peers, rather than to go out of their way to avoid adverse reactions.

My child resolutely refuses to dress up ever for anything. I'd be taking it up with the school if any bullying arose from this.

theres no good missing the tie because when he found out he could dress up as whatever they wanted he came rushing up to me and said I am going to dress up as Harry Potter with the tie and everything and I said well you already have a tie in your uniform but he said it’s different which it is but I told him people could make fun of him and he just said go away it’s y choice and if I want to wear it I will. He will wear it after school as well though until bedtime he said. It’s just really strange because with his school tie he takes as soon as he is out of the school and now he is so keen to wear Harry Potter outfit that involves wearing the piece of clothing he hates. Just does not make sense

Every World Book Day, I would say approximately 80% of my sons class go dressed as Harry/Hermione, so he definitely won’t be the only one!

minipie · 14/09/2023 19:23

Of course it does! He’s happy to wear a tie as part of a fun costume, just not every day as part of school uniform.

My two sometimes went in uniform because they didn't want to dress up. They weren't the only ones either. Or they went in jeans/t shirt as Charlie cook. No one ever batted an eyelid either way.

But a tie is a tie what is the difference. Your saying that let’s say you hated ties and always had you would be happy to wear that until bedtime just because it’s your favourite outfit.

I think you should chill out & let your son wear what he wants

minipie · 15/09/2023 14:40

Buy the outfit and let him wear it.

DrivingCadillacsInOurDreams · 15/09/2023 14:51

It's Harry Potter - without doubt one of the most common outfits for book dress up days.

What do you think is going to happen? I bet loads of other kids will be going as Harry Potter.

piglet81 · 15/09/2023 15:14

I think you should let him dress up, and also stop telling him things like ‘people might make fun of you’ - how is that helpful?!

Tydfutkfykfugykkuyvjg · 15/09/2023 18:24

Ok I will order it thanks for the advice.

So I have ordered it and it came in prime delivery from Amazon so came the day after I ordered it. When it arrived he put it on and wearer it all day. I then told him to put on his pjs an hour before bed. He went to bed in his pjs and in the morning when I went to wake him up he was in his Harry Potter costume. What should I do I feel like he is obsessed with this outfit and that if it happens once it could happen again. I’m thinking of his mental health here aswell.

Grin Come on, this is clearly fiction. At 18.24 you’re ‘going to order it’ and by 21.22 you’ve not only ordered it but it’s arrived and the said child has worn it all day AND woke up in it? Have you stolen Hermione’s time turner?!

Tydfutkfykfugykkuyvjg · 15/09/2023 22:17

I got it second hand and typo did not come from Amazon came from neighbour who I paid half price for it and then he wore it all the rest of the day and woke up into it. But he took it off and put his pjs on when I was there so he must of changed when I was not there

Quite

GalileoHumpkins · 16/09/2023 11:41

How on earth could it came in prime delivery from Amazon be a typo for it came second hand from a neighbour?
