Has everyone’s car insurance gone up?

Just had renewal notification and it’s gone up by £200 despite nothing changing and no new claims. Quick glance at a comparison site doesn’t show anything much cheaper. Is this the way it is now, cost of living etc? I’m wondering whether to just accept it or spend half a day ringing round companies trying to get a better deal.

Hi, yes, I've just been sorting mine out too. Was shocked to get a quote of £140 more for no apparent reason. It is definitely worth shopping around though, as I've just managed to find something for 'only' £40 more instead.

Mine was the same,

up 200, I phoned the existing provider and said it was more than I was expecting it to rise and they re-did the quote which saved 100, so still up, just not as much!

divinededacende · 14/09/2023 13:22

Yep, same here. I started driving in my 30's and it's been 4 years of no claims so far. My premiums have been going steadily down since I first got my license until this year when they went up.

WeWereInParis · 14/09/2023 13:33

Yep, mine went up by just over £100. When I checked the comparison sites there was nothing cheaper.

frozendaisy · 14/09/2023 13:36

Yes about 45% what to do need the car for the time being.

Riverlee · 14/09/2023 13:37

Yep, mine went up £500! (Includes a young adult on the insurance). Phoned them and got £100 knocked off. Was shocked at the increase.

Housing insurance also gone up a hundred pounds.

Prices have gone up, as the cost of getting cars repaired or replaced has gone up, but some insurers just take the piss or hope you renew automatically without checking or shopping around.

My renewal quote this month was more than double last year's (£350ish to more than £700), despite no accidents or changes to justify that. I went on a comparison site and found several quotes only about 10% more than I was paying before.

What really annoyed me was that I had to spend about 45 minutes waiting for an online chat person to become available to decline the auto-renew with the old company - buying it takes 5 minutes, but they make it so much harder to cancel.

MintJulia · 14/09/2023 13:38

£286 to £502.

no accidents or penalties in the last year. I haven't changed my car, my address, no. of miles etc. Just me on the policy. 23 years ncb.

One company wanted to charge me £800

It isn't even a particularly trendy car.

MadeForThis · 14/09/2023 13:53

£270 to £430

No claims or changes. 13 years no claims.

It's shocking.

Phoned to cancel and managed to get it down to £360

Price comparison online was all similar to the £430 figure.

Remember cashback sites. Lots had £36/38 cashback. Not much but it all counts.

sjj28358 · 14/09/2023 13:59

Mine has doubled. I can probably get it down from the £669 quoted at renewal to about £500, but not to £330 which it was last year.

Dread to think what it will be when I have to add DD when she eventually passes her test.

I'm completely exhausted with all these price rises, it's like a kick in the teeth every single day.

PurplePansy05 · 14/09/2023 14:00

Yes, mine is around £150 more pa to what I expected. I saw an article about it by Martin Lewis last month.
