Is it possible to change kitchen counters without changing cabinets?

Posting here for traffic - I'm desperate to change my kitchen counters, they're black granite or something similar with sparkly bits and I hate them!! The rest of the kitchen is ok-ish (not what I would have chosen but I can't afford to replace the lot) but I think new, white or pale counters would massively lighten the whole room. Has anyone done this? I'm only finding those companies that overlay existing counters so I suspect it's not easy...

Sometimes they glue the tops down.
Overlay is safer

I had it done in my house when I moved in, but the previous worktop was laminate and I replaced it with a different laminate worktop. I also removed the old sink and built in hob and replaced them too. To be honest it was a bit of a DIY job with my ex and one of his joiner friends but they managed it and it looks good a year later! Just had to redo all the silicone sealant around the edge where the worktop meets the tiling too.

Yes any joiner should be able to do it-great relatively inexpensive way to update your kitchen

Check underneath, if screwed down probably more straightforward but might be glued too, in which case go carefully or you risk damaging the cupboards but yes in theory possible.

We have had ours changed a couple of times, so it's definitely possible. Our first worktops got stained and damaged, so we changed them to something more robust. We then painted our cupboards a few years back and have finally got around to changing the worktops to something that matches better. I have just checked the only visible joint at the dishwasher and they are screwed on to the cupboard carcasses using small brackets.

Yes. If you can get the black sparkly granite off in one piece you could sell it on eBay with buyer collects. It is very heavy so you'll need 3 people to lift it off if a 3 metre run. You can pick a lighter worktop then.
