I’ve Marie Kondo’d my house and it’s scarily tidy

Well, when I say house, what I’ve actually Kondo’d so far is our bedroom and the DC’s, as it’s very time consuming. I’ve got rid of a huge amount of stuff from these two bedrooms alone (probably about 6-8 binbags worth) and that’s from two rooms that probably the majority of people would say were not hugely cluttered in the first place.

On the one hand it feels AMAZING knowing that everything I’ve kept is something I consciously want or need, everything has its place and is totally organised. I keep going into the rooms and marveling at how tidy they are. Also, cleaning the bedrooms now takes about 5 minutes max and my wardrobe only contains clothes that I actually wear. On the other hand the bedrooms now look so tidy that it almost feels like an Airbnb or something, which is kind of strange! Has anyone else felt like this when doing a massive declutter?

I only wish I could declutter to the extent I’d get that feeling!
I have Kondo’d my pants and socks though and I do enjoy those drawers.

continentallentil · 13/09/2023 21:32

No. I’d like to though.

Would you come and do my house so I can? Pretty please 😍

Rattymare · 13/09/2023 21:34

I wish I could do that. Following for inspiration 😊

Lol - you say that, but it’s actually a bit unnerving!

Also, I was surprised by how long it took - I thought I could blitz both rooms in one day but it has taken me about three weeks on and off to get to this point. It also looked a heck of a lot worse before it got better (much to DH’s bemusement) as I took everything out of cupboards etc!

How did you get your kids to agree to get rid of so much stuff?

SootspriteSearcher · 13/09/2023 21:46

I would love to do this. I declutter but never enough to get this feeling.

I do have a collector mentality, I love little knick knacks and things that hold memories which I find hard to let go of. This also extends to clothes... I have way too many tshirts but I can't help buying new ones when I see an awesome design 🙈

They’re very young so wouldn’t even notice me getting rid of old clothes etc. I’m lucky in that regard!

I’ve done lots of decluttering in the past too, but this is the first time I’ve been really hard core about it!

I would love my house to be ‘scarily tidy’. But I have loads of clothes and wear them all, ditto the kids. And I already do loads of washing and feel like I’d have to do even more with fewer clothes. The only stuff in our house I could happily get rid of is all DH’s but that feels a bit unfair Grin

MerelyPlaying · 13/09/2023 21:54

It's just because it's new - it will look familiar after a few more days. I did this about five years ago. Best thing I've ever done, and my goodness some of it was hard going.

I still have far too much stuff and you wouldn't call my house minimalist, but it's made my life so much easier, from cleaning to finding things to packing for holidays. And you know what? I can hardly remember a single thing that I gave away or threw out.

wondering7777 · 13/09/2023 21:54

I always wanted to be scarily tidy too, but now that the bedrooms are I have mixed feelings! On the one hand it’s a lovely, “weight off my shoulders” type feeling but on the other, the house feels too empty.

I have SO MUCH STUFF. Don’t even know where to begin. I do love having nice things, I just weren’t there weren’t quite so many.

That’s encouraging to hear, thanks! 🙏

If all your stuff is genuinely nice and gives you pleasure then I say keep it! I had a lot of crap in my house that was just piling up with no benefit.

The rooms I’ve done look immaculate and I feel a lot of satisfaction from it. BUT my worry is that my house doesn’t look or feel “homely” anymore! (Well, the two rooms I’ve done that is. The rest of it is still a tip!)

OP posts:
wondering7777 · 13/09/2023 22:04

I won’t lie though, the feeling of satisfaction is immense.

Can anyone tell me what marie kondoing a room does to it?

And i know i could Google but cba

ssd · 13/09/2023 22:09

Is it just clearing out old stuff??

Rummikub · 13/09/2023 22:15

It’s a method to clear out.
gather everything that’s the same category eg pens (starting small) then pick only those that are useful/ bring you joy. Get rid of the rest.

Do the same with clothes eg all your tops gather from everywhere then only keep those that spark joy.

Rummikub · 13/09/2023 22:15

I started then stopped. Unfortunately.

wondering7777 · 13/09/2023 22:20

To be fair when I say that I Marie Kondo’d, it was just a way of saying that I’ve done a massive declutter. I did ask myself whether things were beautiful, sparked joy or were useful but i didn’t follow her method beyond that.

fiddlesticksandotherwords · 13/09/2023 22:23

Can I borrow you to come and help me do my loft please?!

Rummikub · 13/09/2023 22:25

How did you do it?

i think that’s what I found overwhelming- gathering everything together. Kondo lite would be useful!

determinedtomakethiswork · 13/09/2023 22:37

What is so strange is the feeling of immense satisfaction and relief when you do it. Just opening a drawer that has been sorted according to her standards is such a satisfying thing to do.

My mum used to iron everything and she said that's what she liked was creating order out of chaos and I think it's the same with Marie Kondo.
