Anyone else seem to be getting more intolerant to fruit as they get older?

I used to eat all sorts of fruit when I was a kid. I'm now 32 and gradually, over the years, certain fruits that I used to be able to eat just fine, now make my mouth and throat itch like mad! I can still eat apples and some berries but most other things are a no go. I bought some pears the other day, just eaten one and now my mouth and throat are itchy as hell ☹️ I know from experience that it won't last long but it's so upsetting. Why is this happening?!

Me too unfortunately. Can’t eat melons apart from a wee bit of watermelon. Apart from that, all I can tolerate is berries and by that I mean a handful at a time.

Oh yes I can eat watermelon too, but no other melon, which makes me really sad because I used to LOVE cantaloupe!

Yes, this happened to me. I have also had very bad hayfever since the age of 5 that i never grew out of despite the GP telling my mum i probably would!

Look up something called Oral Allergy Syndrome or Pollen Food Syndrome. Allergy UK have a factsheet that is really useful. It explained a lot of my symptoms and helped me manage it a bit better after i had a very scary experience eating melon where my whole throat felt like it was closing up when i was in my mid 20s out of nowhere.

For me, cooking the fruits that trigger those symptoms help and i now always keep antihistamines with me in case i eat some raw fruit that affects me badly.

Coffeaddict · 13/09/2023 12:35

For me it's raw vegetables especially root veg like carrot. But fine with them cooked 🤷‍♀️

I have coeliac disease and now it seems ANY grains affect my gut. Even bloody rice. (Obviously something more at place than coeliac disease.) Also dairy gives me issues also.

crostini · 15/09/2023 06:21

Yes! This happened to me, it's linked to hay fever. A similar enzyme to in pollen, appears in certain fruit, so your immune system mistakenly tries to attack it, causing hay fever like symptoms, if I remember correctly. It's bloody annoying because I adore fruit.

LovelyDaaling · 15/09/2023 06:55

They don't call me Iron Guts for nothing. I eat pounds of fresh fruit per week with no side effects and I'm not young.

Merrymagpies · 15/09/2023 06:57

Me too. No allergies to anything until menopause which has triggered oral allergy syndrome, most fruit and some nuts being the problem. Very annoying.

Solasum · 15/09/2023 06:58

possibly some kind of reaction to pesticides etc too?

SeasonalWitch · 15/09/2023 06:58

It’s related to pollen/hay fever. I don’t have this but did develop hay fever in my late thirties, which the dr said was really common.

I have become sensitive to fruits though - I can eat berries and apples but most other fruits just taste like sugary acid to me now.

mushroomushroom · 15/09/2023 07:29

I have oral allergy syndrome to certain fruits and nuts. I had bad hayfever as a child which eased up after puberty, but I still have hayfever of course. My mouth and throat and ears started getting itchy when I ate raw apples and cherries and hazelnuts and chestnuts when I was in my mid twenties. Now I avoid the fruits I know will make me uncomfortable, I eat them cooked though. No offending nuts though, those seem to be the worst.

If you have hayfever and know what you're allergic to you can find charts that will indicate what foods you're also likely to have issue with. For me those are pretty accurate, and I thank my lucky stars I can eat almonds and melons 😂

Over the years I've acquired intolerances to grains, yeast, onions and all onion relatives, preserved meats, kiwi fruits, all squashes, cucumber, melon, etc., the list keeps growing. Keep your antihistamines to hand and DONT EAT the stuff that makes your throat itch. Modern life.

Yes, melons are the worst for me. My throat itches so badly. Avocado has started doing it too. Gutted.
