What room do you keep your guinea pigs in?

We have basically promised to get the children guinea pigs. We were going to keep them in the kitchen but I don't want to put them near the radiator.

Where do you keep yours?

We kept them in our child's bedroom. They didn't disturb her sleep at all, and weren't smelly. Kept a little handheld hoover there to keep on top of loose shavings/hay. Used C&C cage (basically metal shelving from Amazon) which meant could customise the shape for the space we had and also built storage for all their food etc underneath. They now love permanently in a large, insulated hutch outside though - eventually we decided they were taking up too much space inside.

Ours are now in the dining room. They started off outside then the beast from the east came so we brought them in and that is where they have stayed.

It's lovely having them inside as they love interactions and I feel they would have got ignored too much outside.

In our kitchen diner in a large 4x4 C&C run with corex plastic base cut to size. They become part of the family!

My dc's bedroom. They need an enormous enclosure, the tiny piggies you buy will not stay that way for long! If you go on social media you can find a whole world of cage set ups to look at Smile
There's a small pets area on mumsnet too for lots of advice.
I think they're great pets - they are not short lived either which is what we wanted but do be aware of that! I've one that is over 6 at the moment.

FLOWER1982 · 13/09/2023 07:04

Ours live outside in their cage and have a run to go on the grass when not wet. We only bring them in when very hot or cold weather.

Petalpup · 13/09/2023 07:05

Ours are in the hall. They like to be involved in all the comings and goings!

Munchyseeds2 · 13/09/2023 07:44

Ours are in the kitchen, kept on fleece and not smelly at all.
As already said, they love all the comings and goings

TeenDivided · 13/09/2023 07:48

Spare bedroom, lots of space and people pop in on their way past.

TaaLaa · 13/09/2023 10:25

Living room. Use fleece bedding which doesn't smell much.

roseopose · 13/09/2023 10:28

I've always kept them outside, in a run with covered area and bed box in spring summer then in a hutch in the shed with outside time if the weather is ok. They're still very friendly and make weeweewee noises at me for a treat whenever I go up the garden.

LER83 · 13/09/2023 10:30

Mine lived outside in a large hutch with hot water bottles in the winter! Then when they got old they came inside and lived in the dining room as that was the only room that had enough space! Eldest piggy was 8 when she died. Be warned that in the kitchen, everytime you open the fridge or rustle a packet they will squeak like mad for food!

BananaSpanner · 13/09/2023 10:31

Dining room.

unlikelychump · 13/09/2023 21:29

Thanks for all the replies. I might move from the kitchen to the dining room. What is this fleece bedding of which we speak? This seems new.

We have a cage already, so that bit is covered.

Put them in the playroom many moons ago

Toottootcar · 13/09/2023 21:54

How bigs the cage? There aren't many cages that are big enough for guineas. Since you haven't got them yet it's worth saying how much space they need!

Petalpup · 13/09/2023 22:46

We use bath mats for ours instead of sawdust to cut down on the mess.
They are litter trained so only wee in their litter box so it’s just a matter of shaking/sweeping the poo off the mats daily and washing them in a pet laundry bag once a week or so.

Stompythedinosaur · 13/09/2023 23:28

Ours live in the living room.

Stompythedinosaur · 13/09/2023 23:30

I agree with a pp - I used to have purpose made fleece liners, but have discovered that an old towel with a noodle bath mat on top is much more absorbent and also easier to clean without getting hat stuck to it (which inevitably gets in my washing machine).

LoveSick64 · 14/09/2023 05:18

Ours are indoors, in the family room. We dont have other pets so we can forgo the wire top bit of the cage. This means, regular cuddles, snacks and more intereaction. They never escape from their cage.

Daisymay2 · 26/11/2023 17:31

Ours lived in the conservatory in a massive hutch. They spent quite a lot of time in an outside hutch,as well, including in the winter when they were out from about 11 to 1 if the weather was dry.
