Help…maggotty bin

Our bin, and side alley, is absolutely covered with maggots this evening.it’s making me nauseous!!
Obviously once the bin is emptied I can clean it and make sure I am better managing food waste.
but what do I do in the 2 days until the bin is collected? They’re fucking everywhere!!!

Google how to kill maggots.

Lesina · 12/09/2023 23:32

Boiling water and or jayes fluid.

This happened when my son forgot the bin night. I opened it at the bottom of the garden . Birds came and took all the maggots . After collected , hot water , bleach , then power washed .

Yes, open the bin! The birds will do an amazing job and deal with them very quickly. You can feel smug from your eco-friendly, no effort approach. Win-win.

JetBlackSteed · 12/09/2023 23:59

Leave the bin open, I had a robin who feasted and thought hung about to thank me! Not really obv, but the birds will do it for you.

Our local council won’t empty a bin with maggots in.

I did this once too and the clean up was truly nauseating. I got well covered up (old clothes/rubber gloves) tipped the wheelie bin upside down in the middle of the garden and hosed it all down. I then double-bagged the bin bags, checked for any maggotty hitchhikers and took the bags to the tip.

The maggots in the garden were soon gobbled by the birds! The wheelie bin got bleached and hey presto, all sorted.

@KTSl1964 I did worry ours
Might not collect it too, hence why I’d like to kill them off if possible.

so most common answer seems to be open the bin and let
birds eat the maggots?

Boiling water and bleach

hairyspiderleg · 13/09/2023 00:08

If the birds don't do the job, pour loads of salt into the bin.

DiscoBeat · 13/09/2023 00:13

It's food for wildlife, as others have said. No need for bleach (although I would clean the bin afterwards with a mild solution). Try to compost food to avoid putting anything like that in there afterwards.

Doyoumind · 13/09/2023 00:17

When I had this I tried boiling water and sprays, but the birds were definitely the best solution. Then jeyes fluid after to clean everything up.
