Any antique buffs? How would this Georgian object have been used?

Well I know how it would have been used but I can't work out if it was a ring or a fob or as is

It's an intaglio and I believe it's Georgian. Obviously lots of people used intaglios prior to postage stamps, to seal letters and stamp things

It's tiny - no bigger than the top third of my finger and it's a clear lilac glass. The name inscribed is 'Eliza' so clearly belonged to a woman

But it surely just have been part of something else? What do you think?

I think it looks like the inset of a ring. Normally a gemstone but in this case engraved glass. Maybe for a little girl? It’s sweet, whatever it is.

Ah maybe it's not an intaglio then? Maybe it is the insert of a ring? Good point

Just seen that you'd suggested that already!

I think it is an intaglio but would have been set into a ring or fob.

Is it definitely glass?

CaptainMyCaptain · 12/09/2023 20:15

Surely if it was a seal the name would come out backwards.

ThunderCloudsinSumer · 12/09/2023 20:17

I love it whatever it is

FrogInTheFog · 12/09/2023 20:17

I think it could have been inset into a ring as it's not much bigger than the stone in my ring

It's amethyst I believe - or amethyst glass at least. It reads Eliza from left to right as you look at it

I am a literary rather than material historian but I work on that period and would also guess ring.

If it’s too big to be a ring then it could be for a brooch or a locket.
