Freebies + selling on Etsy?

Hey guys, I’m an Etsy seller (just started a few months ago) and I’m getting a couple of sales a day. I sell scrunchies right now, will be starting other hair accessories too soon. I was just wondering, as a buyer or seller on any platform, do you guys think it’s a good ideas to include freebies? I was thinking to include a sticker or two in every parcel? I already include short personalised thank you notes, and if a buyer buys scrunchies over £20 then I include a free random scrunchie. Is it a good idea or not to include a cute sticker in the package?

Are they aimed at kids? I guess the stickers would be fine. I got a sticker with my Glossier order and was a bit bemused!

Any freebie is a nice personal touch.

They’re not aimed at kids

I'm not sure adults would want a sticker. A wrapped sweet maybe? A freebie for a big order is nice.

YouHoooo · 12/09/2023 14:45

It wouldn’t make me more likely to buy again, which I guess is your core question. Of course a freebie is nice, but the only relevant things are the product quality and price.

Stichintime · 12/09/2023 14:47

I'd view it as a waste of resources as I'd be unlikely to use it.

BasicPumpkinSpice · 12/09/2023 14:51

IDK - it's a nice gesture and I take it positively, but generally if it's a sweet I put it in the bin (if I still worked in the office I would take it there and add it to the candy jar).

I think if it's related to what you are selling it's fine, but it's really not necessary

NormaLouiseBates · 12/09/2023 14:55

I love and appreciate a freebie but would rather something like a couple of sweets or something than a sticker which would just go in the bin sadly.

I think it's unnecessary. A waste of money. I'd rather have a nice scrunchie, attractively wrapped and arriving safely, than stickers or notes. You can't be making much profit on each as it is, and you need to be building up a solid income for your efforts. Craftspeople are notoriously badly rewarded for their considerable efforts, which is wrong. The product is ample, truly! Focus your income, don't waste it on gimmicks.

mindutopia · 12/09/2023 14:58

I wouldn't bother. Why spend the money? I usually bin this stuff. It wouldn't make me buy from you again. It's the quality of the product that would do that.

If what you are selling is good quality and well-priced, people will buy again.

That said, you've just reminded me that I have a horse vitamin that I buy regularly every two months. Their website says, 'we include a free mini chocolate bar with every purchase!' (first of all, why? it's a horse supplement!) 'tell us here if you need a nut or dairy free option!'. I don't need a nut or dairy free option, but I have never actually received a chocolate bar in any of my purchases. 😂I do, however, find having to answer that question every time to be annoying. I'd rather spend £2 less on the bloody expensive supplement than get a free chocolate I don't even want.

DelilahBucket · 12/09/2023 15:03

Unnecessary and is unlikely to make customers go "oh they were amazing they sent me a free sticker". It will be long forgotten. I say this as an Etsy seller myself. You have to remember as well, if you are in it to make money, a lot of sellers fail because they try to go the extra mile to such an extent it wastes time and money on their part and they don't actually earn anything.

mycoffeecup · 12/09/2023 15:08

I'd rather you take the cost of the 'freebie' off the cost of the price - as it isn't free, you've factored it into your business running costs. Would make me less likely to buy from you in future.

Thank you so much guys :)

As an Etsy seller, I have a code for repeat customers to give them a discount on their next order which seems to be working.
