Do you encourage your teen to drink milk ?

I sometimes wonder if mine get enough calcium. They sometimes have toast for breakfast , don’t want milk to drink. Will have yogurt at dinner time. Not sure about lunch at school. I pour glass of milk for them in evening but they aren’t keen and drink half of it sometimes.

I don’t think other people think about this? Maybe I am unnecessarily concerned. I just think they are still growing a lot and surely need a lot of calcium.

I don't. We aren't a cereal eating family and I only drink milk in latte form so I'd be hypocritical pushing milk on the kids.
They only drink milk with a spicy meal like curry or having a hot chocolate during the cold months. Otherwise they get calcium from other sources like cheese and vegetables.

Mine takes after me and absolutely loves milk, if anything I have to tell her to take it easy and stop guzzling it all. Saw her disappear into her room with a fucking pint glass of it last night.

She has excellent hair, teeth and nails though so the calcium does seem to do her good!

pre-digested milk (yoghurt, cheese etc) is better as the calcium can actually be taken up by the body.

My children are almost teens and both skinny and slightly fussy eaters. I give them milk not only for calcium but for all the other nutrients it provides. It's a complete food so is extremely nutritious. They both (sometimes) have cereal and I give them a milkshake or hot chocolate after school. Ok I know this isn't the healthiest way to have milk but I use a really small amount of milkshake powder (half a teaspoon). I often give plain yogurt and fruit for dessert. They both like cheese.

I was never a milk drinker. I have very dense bones. My dc have never been milk drinkers. No idea if their bone density but none if then gas ever broken a bone. A lot of it is genetics and overall nutrition. Not just milk.

My teen drinks pints of it every day. However, when he was in hospital recently, the paediatrician advised him to cut down drinking so much as it blocks certain vitamins being absorbed by the body.

Mine sometimes have milk, 4 boys 22-12 and it’s never crossed my mind to make sure they drink milk. They all have balanced diets are healthy and strong also tall so am not particularly worried about them in terms of diet. If they had a particularly poor diet I would perhaps supplement but I don’t worry about it.

I am glad you see my point @uhOhOP
i do feel it’s something people assume is just there in a balanced diet. But looking at my Greek yogurt in the fridge it is 144mg per 100g. Probably around 200mg calcium in a typical portion. So you would need 6 of these to get the required calcium for a teen. Maybe there are other little bits of 10/20mg in all the other foods they have, apples, bananas, bread, etc that add up too.

yea I maybe should just give a supplement but I would prefer to cover it with a balanced diet

So, include it in their diet. Have more leafy green veg than the occasional bit of broccoli. There will be additional health and nutritional benefits. Win win.

No my daughter doesn't drink milk ever. Very occasionally has a bowl of cereal. Cheese - a bit but not a lot. I don't worry about it she eats a healthy diet.
My son only uses almond or oat milk.
