If I build a time machine, would you like a lift back and to where & when?

I’d choose a weekend in 1986.

I’m 13. It’s a Saturday morning, I get up, dad will cook me eggy bread but will call it ‘French toast’ and I’ll think that’s dead posh.

I’ll watch a bit of Saturday Superstore whilst mum pops to the Post Office to get her Woman’s Weekly magazine and my Just 17 and Smash Hits mags and Mandy for my younger sister.

I’ll then pop into town with my friends and mooch around the shops, have a browse in Our Price for the latest No.1 single then into Tammy Girl and Top Shop and finally pop into Woolies for some Pic n Mix.
Catch the train back home and tint my permed hair with a Shaders Champagne Gold tint and end up with patchy orange hair, then follows the meltdown because I can NOT possibly go to school on Monday looking like this 🤣

Later we’ll have a chippy tea (or a Chinese take away if it’s someone’s birthday) and we will all sit down as a family and watch Gladiators, Blind Date and The Generation Game. Mum and dad might even let us stay up late and watch Dempsey and Makepeace or a video hired from the local video shop (ie the bit at the back of the local corner shop).

On Sunday dad will wash the car, we’ll have a lovely roast with Nan and Grandad round, a long dog walk in the afternoon then toasted sandwiches and soup for tea, a bath and watch Songs of Praise (yawn) and Bullseye then bed. School the next day, boohoo!

Where do you want to get dropped off?

10the June 1934 but I'd need to take a good wedge of money with me.

Why that date ?

MoxieFox · 12/09/2023 16:36

I’d like to go back and see who built Stone Henge

Early first century Palestine please, so I can check out what was really going on with that Jesus bloke.

Will you be taking a DNA kit to find out if Joseph really is the Daddy? 🤐

LoveStHelier · 12/09/2023 16:54

march 31st 2010. When I was misdiagnosed with a minor illness that caused me chronic pain for 12 years.

in happier times, 1990 - britpop, uni, fun!

PrincessHoneysuckle · 12/09/2023 17:18

To a Saturday in 1999.
Getting ready for a night on the town age 19.
Pubs and clubs with my close friends, not a care in the world as still living at home.

Sunsnet · 12/09/2023 17:37

Wouldn't your dad get a bit freaked out when a middled aged woman walked into the house and started eating his daughter's breakfast and then tried to hang out with her 13 year old friends? Although it was the 80s, maybe you'd get a stint on children's TV out of it!

Neverplayleapfrogwithmrpipes · 12/09/2023 17:42

I would travel to Austria in 1885 to stop the wedding of Mr and Mrs Hitler!

dubyalass · 12/09/2023 18:23

Some time in 1993-4. Mostly so I could snog the delectable Dan, who I only found out fancied me long after we'd lost contact. But also going clubbing with good friends, doing A-levels and generally having an amazing time with not a care.

LastNightAPandaSavedMyLife · 12/09/2023 18:25

@marytime yes I remember that!

ValerieDoonican · 12/09/2023 18:29

Id like to go back to 1820 and watch my house being built, and how it was decorated and furnished, how the family lived in it, how on earth they kept warm, what they did with the garden....

ValerieDoonican · 12/09/2023 18:30

...and find out what the mysterious square hole in the hearthstone was for!

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 12/09/2023 18:31

Sometime between 1997 and 1999. To tell young teenage self not to make a series of mistakes that would affect the rest of my life. Because I sure as hell wouldn't have listened to anyone else!!

On a lighter note I'd also tell me to for fucks sake stay in touch with my school friends, and not lose contact with people I would sorely miss as an adult. I'd also pop and see Grandma while I was there.

Thethruththewholetruth · 12/09/2023 18:34

I’d go back to 1994, to the local park when the boy I had fancied my whole secondary school life ask me out but I said no as I was scared he would discover I had an abusive step dad. I regret that decision so much and I think about him all the time, we were so close as friends and just wish I had gone with it, it felt so special. He randomly got in touch a few months ago and we had a lovely chat. I had the best summer that year, full of laughs, adventure and feeling cared about. I’d go back to that feeling in a shot. My life changed unimaginably the next year after that when my fabulous dad passed away, what a difference a year can make, I’ve never felt the same as that summer since.

StorminanDcup · 12/09/2023 18:41

I’d like to go back to my early childhood and spend time with my parent who died when I was young.

Then I’d like to back to my gcse year and work really fucking hard, go to college then uni and make the most of my life.

Id also like to go back to the early days my kids were born and drink it all in, that newborn baby bubble that feels like it’ll never end but it actually goes way too fast

Fourlegsandatail · 12/09/2023 18:41

Was Gladiators on in the 80s? I thought it was a 90s thing. Your day sounds fantastic though OP.

Some of these are really touching and my heart goes out to those who have lost loved ones.

Althenameshavegone · 12/09/2023 18:43

1997, first year of High school, I’d find 11 year old me and tell her to keep in touch with her old friends, join the sports clubs, keep reading and explain that her mum doesn’t believe in her so she has to believe in herself

Jux · 12/09/2023 18:44

I'd got to so many times/places! I want to see Jesus saying something profound, I want to watch Pompeii being devaststed, I want to see how they lived before farming or animal husbandry developed. I want to see who invented cake and why and who boiled the first egg, and so on and so forth.

In my own life, I would go to August 65 or 66. I am camping with my brothers and parents. All the adults are occupied either in the choir or the orchestra and all us kids are left to ourselves. There areany of us, ages range from 4 or so to young teens. We are playong some sort of adventure game and are exploring the woods surrounding the camp. We're not really supposed to go in them without an adult butt wr do anyway. It is a golden time. The bell will ring for coffe and we will stream into the courtyard to find our parents and get drinks and biscuits. Then we'll all go off again while the oarents continue their rehearsals. My main friend and I may go into the barn and sit on squashy old armchairs listening to the orchestra and we shall play in quiet undertones, or read or just watch and listen. A stray adult may give us a task or suggest some interesting occupation for the afternoon. Or we might wander into the ping pong room and watch whoever's playing in there.

The it'll be lunchtime and we'll all find our respective parents and get fed. And so the day goes on.

I'd go back there and stay if I could, truly happy times those holidays.

Crunchymum · 12/09/2023 18:48

Absolutely any day before my mum died. I wouldn't care which day.

On a less depressing note when I met my DP in 2007. Such happy, happy times.

Northernsouloldies · 12/09/2023 18:51

Aberdeen music hall Northern soul niter 82 then dropped off again at Morecambe Central pier niter 83.👀

I feel inspired now, and slightly embarrassed by my more shallow choices! Blush

HumphreyCobblers · 12/09/2023 21:08

I would like to go back in time to Skara Brae when they evacuated it suddenly and see what happened. Then maybe to see what went on at Stonehenge and Durrington Walls and see if the death/life hypothesis is correct. Maybe a quick look at a newly built pyramid? Definitely a look at Jesus too.

I have just been reading What Katy Did and the sequels and it made me long to see both Europe and America at that time, especially the canyons in Colorado.

On a personal note I would go back to Christmas Eve about 1980.

notanothernamechange12 · 12/09/2023 23:06

I'd love for it to be summer 2010, I was 19/20

Still saw my grandad most days
Had been with my now husband a few months and it was magical.
Spent the whole summer with friends, talking, dancing, partying.

Youth is wasted on the young!

BarelyLiterate · 12/09/2023 23:22

I would like to go back to late April 1899, and to a small town in Austria called Braunau am Inn. I would find the house where a dark haired newborn baby boy was sleeping in his cot. I would sneak into his room, place one hand over his nose & mouth, the other round his neck and I would kill him.

His name, of course, is Adolf Hitler.

onwardandupwards · 12/09/2023 23:27

I'd love to go way way bk because I'd just really love to see a dinosaur!

MoorlandWanderer · 12/09/2023 23:32

Just a few months please so I could see my daughter’s school play and just call in sick instead of asking for the day off 2 weeks before, which was refused.
