Wardrobe clearout - only 30% of my clothes are left!

My wardrobe has been bulging at the seams for ages now. Today I went through everything and got rid of anything that I hadn’t worn in a year, stuff that didn’t fit me anymore (I’ve put on half a stone in the last two years) and anything stained. I also got rid of ill-fitting shoes or anything where the coating has literally worn away (such as my old brogues). I’ve now only got about 20 items left in my wardrobe! Have I gone too far?!

If you didn't wear it - NO you have not gone too far
If it didn't fit - No you have not gone too far

Is what you have left really all you have been wearing (for the last year or so)?
Or have you been wearing the stained worn out stuff and feeling bad about yourself?

A bit of both I think. I just keep thinking, what if I lose that half a stone one day and can fit into those old clothes again? But they’ve been sitting in my wardrobe for several years unworn.

I think it's a good thing. I've done the same.
It's going to make us really think hard before we buy clothing in the future,do I really need it/ do I love it.
I feel great about my wardrobe of 30 items.

Wow well done! I'm intending to do the same. My unworn clothes just create a problem for me as my wardrobe and drawers are all stuffed full, so getting things in and out us always a problem. I need to bite the bullet and get rid

Very well done. You obviously have enough to wear for now so you have not gone too far. So what next? Make sure you plan your autumn/winter wardrobe before it gets cold.

I read Curated Closet and am now working through the steps. I fear most of my wardrobe will have to go for me to have the put together style that fits my lifestyle that I crave. But I will have a plan and know exactly what I'm shopping for rather than just buying anything that takes my fancy.

Also, last time I accepted I was never going to lose that half stone and got rid of clothes that were too small I magically lost it in about 6 weeks. Hoping that happens again.

Wow, that is excellent work! Well done!

I've always wanted to do this but I'm a terrible emotional hoarder and I just can't bring myself to.

Iliketulips · 12/09/2023 08:02

Wish I could do the same, I have so many clothes but all get worn and no reason to throw out.

All stained items can definitely go. You mentioned what if you lose weight. Do you want to lose weight - if so, try it now. Keep a box of the nicest things that are too big and definitely set a goal that if you can't get in them in three/six months the box goes.

Lilyhatesjaz · 12/09/2023 08:34

I had quite a few things I had been keeping for years in case I lost weight.
I actually lost the weight but a lot of the clothes were by that time so old fashioned that once I could try them on and look at them properly I got rid of them anyway.

Nevermind202020 · 12/09/2023 08:37

Well done, I need to do this (again) soon, though to perhaps not such a low level (I tend to have seasonal wardrobes so there are definitely more items in it, though some are not 'year round' items).
If you can work with your thirty items then that's fab, but you may now see 'gaps' in certain areas and you can fill those knowing there is space for them and that you will get a chance to wear them.

thecatsthecats · 12/09/2023 09:24

I've done similar, except for clothes that I genuinely like and are in good condition and that I would actually wear, I've put them in a sealed box in the attic, for when sizes flux. Not in a "lose two sizes way" but in a "I'm pregnant and don't know what my PP body will be like" way.

I've sold clothes that I ADORE, but that I just know I have no purpose for, and put one small drawer of seasonal stuff aside.

What's left is two small shelves (252525cm), containing every bit of clothes that fit me.

It's hugely liberating to know that they all fit me, suit me, and I like them!
