Just that! I am planning to take two 11 year olds (boy and girl) out for a fancy but in no way intimidating tea. Where would you go?

There's a Charlie and the Chocolate afternoon tea in London, can't remember where I'm so sorry but I booked it for a gift and the recipient loved it!

I think Charlie and the Chocolate factory afternoon tea is at 1 Aldwych. It was amazing (huge sugar rush) afterwards but I think it was fairly pricey. You could try googling some ideas as there's one a London bus I think, plus lots of smaller venues that so good variations.

Harrods Tea room has the best teas for kids, and they’re so kid friendly.

elderflowerandpomelo · 11/09/2023 19:13

I found it! It looks amazing but it’s about twice as much as I can spend (it’d be £170 plus service of 15% for 3). I did google but it’s such a crowded and expensive market that I was hoping for recommendations!

One Aldwych Charlie was £200+ for 3 of us by the time the 12% gratuity was added.
That was the alcohol-free sitting.

Zetter Townhouse is fun and fairly laid back. There's a few companies that do afternoon teas on the Thames on boats. Dunno about quality. Or this one on a canal boat: www.canalmuseum.org.uk/visit/boat-trips.htm

This is fancier but not crazy fancy, like I didn't feel bad for dressing like a bit of a scruff and their cream tea is very tasty www.thewolseley.com also occasionally can get a celeb spot

And tons of themed ones too offered by different companies, Harry Potter, Shakespeare, Red Bus etc.

If you are going in the week look for vouchers from Virgin experience etc.

My dd & I went to the Wolsley it was lovely and very good value.

Riverlee · 11/09/2023 19:22

Also look at Groupon for vouchers.

saw this on another thread and thought if it when I saw your thread title, retro, but not sure they do afternoon tea.

We took ours to Fortnum and Mason ice cream parlour which was lovely for children, they also do afternoon tea. Not crazily expensive either:

Look on group on and off peak months ideally. I had one right near Trafalgar Square that was very good value, not overly posh though (piped music rather than live etc)

Wowcher also have some good discounts, so maybe worth a check.

Mamofteenager · 11/09/2023 20:55

Look at golden tours, it's a bus that you have afternoon tea on as you tour London. I managed to get tickets on Wowcher as was on offer so was cheaper. There is also a Harry Potter tour they do.

You can book a table that seats 4 also. We went just the 2 of us but I think you can just make out the seating plan on the pic below

Sanderson hotel mad hatters tea

elderflowerandpomelo · 13/09/2023 19:09

Thanks so much for ideas. I really had NOT realised how insanely expensive it would be - I need to have a rethink. It’s a birthday present and I’d never spend this amount on a real Thing, so it’s bonkers to haemorrhage money on an ‘experience’ that may even be a bit intimidating.

I think I will either take them for ice creams at Fortnums, or for some beautiful cakes somewhere fancy - I wish it was possible to book at Ottolenghi…
