Hit me with your interview excuses

In case anyone has seen my previous post, I started a new job that isn't great. I have managed to secure a 1st stage interview on Friday via Teams and have asked for half day so can go home and be uninterrupted.
Problem is I should have another interview coming next week and third which may also be this week which would be in person never mind a possible 2nd stage.

How the hell am I getting all this spontaneous leave approved, please hit me with your excuses, wfh isn't an option as not been there long enough unfortunately.

As awful as it is I could feign sickness for next week although I don't agree with this.

When I was a teacher, one of my colleagues told her class she had to wait in for a man to come fix her boiler … suspect she was truthful with management though.

Alternatively, you could say you are getting your flu jab/ Covid booster and then post-vaccine symptoms…

Depends how much you want to burn your bridges…

Annual leave

WellHereIgoagain · 11/09/2023 12:46

Unfortunately I only have about 2 days left due to pre-booked leave (which I can't cancel or they'll wonder why!)

None of their business why you change leave dates though. Personally I've always just been up front about interviews but I know lots of people can't be due to their work places/boss.

InterFactual · 11/09/2023 15:47

Agree with PPs that you shouldn't have to explain but they will obviously ask so it's up to you how much you want to push back on that. You could say it's a medical appointment, generally you're encouraged to use annual leave for them if they can't be made outside of working hours. If rude colleagues push further then you are going for vague 'tests'.

Webmeister999 · 11/09/2023 16:04

When I was "winding down" from a job I knew I would be leaving (to go to uni) I just took a couple of sickies to cover the interviews. I didnt want my boss to know anything about what I was doing or my intentions to leave. I didnt even give a reason in my letter of resignation.

I dont think your interview plans are any business of your employer.

Mummypete · 11/09/2023 16:06

First interview is a dentists check up. Then you need a follow up appointment for a filing and maybe a root canal and crown.
I once thought I was being organised getting a check up before starting a new job and then needed all of these things!

I had to take my son to the orthodontist as he’d broken his brace a couple of times 😉

Epicstorm · 11/09/2023 16:31

Orthodontist appointments in our area are always in school time so that could be useful.

I once covered for a teacher who was off because her kitchen was being refitted. She thought that was reasonable and told the head the truth!

Privatelyliving · 11/09/2023 16:34

I'd just tell them. They might even try and sort the issues.

Illegallyblonder · 11/09/2023 16:37

Pre booked routine medical appointment, arranged before I worked here.

OKbutwhyplease · 11/09/2023 17:06

Minor op here.

Somaliwildass · 11/09/2023 17:17

Use your annual leave. It's working hours and you won't be doing any work, so that's the only fair way. Most jobs expect routine appointments to be done in your free time anyway, so saying it's the dentist might be answered with you needing to book leave.

NoSaladThanks · 11/09/2023 17:23

I think I would go with the dental option. It's common for follow up work to be done after a check up, so it shouldn't raise suspicion.
Plus, everyone knows how difficult it is to get an appointment these days, so it's not unusual to have to take the first one offered, especially if it's a cancellation, so they can't really refuse it.

Thanks all, we have this one sorted.
Any more and we'll cross that bridge when we come to it!
