Spots all over jaw line and under chin?

I’ve had a bad break-out of spots all around my jaw line, which isn’t too unusual for me - but, I’ve also now got them under my chin and one or two on the upper part of my neck. I am early 30s.

I was hormonal last week, but my period has now ended and it’s still not great.

I don’t really have any form of skincare routine. Most of the time I don’t even take my make up off at the end of a working day as most of its come off anyway. But I know this is really bad.

Anyone have any tips on how to deal with these breakouts? Should I call my GP and discuss medication? I’ve been on roaccutane before but this isn’t something I want to go down again.

I have a long standing history of acne, had roaccutane in my teens and have been struggling with hormonal acne in my 30s.

I would recommend starting with a good skincare routine - not taking off make up and not cleansing your skin will be contributing without a doubt. I don't want to recommend products because I found it overwhelming when others did this to me but take a look at Caroline Hirons skincare book as a guide.

I haven't found the GP helpful - options were antibiotics (didn't work when I was younger and I definitely don't want to be taking them for months on end now) and referral for roaccutane. They did offer topicals but GP themself didn't think they would be effective

The Ordinary Niacinamide is great for hormonal break outs. Pretty cheap too

Thank you @prescribingmum. I do have the Caroline Hirons book so I need to give it a read.

@yoghurtknitter I will give this a go! It looks good.

It may be worth getting your thyroid checked out. I got really bad acne around my chin in my early thirties, and it turned out I had an under active thyroid. There are other symptoms associated with it, but the spots were the main indicator for m.

Stop wearing foundation, clean your face!! Use niacinamide or salycilic acid nightly long term and benzoyl peroxide until the worst of the spots have gone.

@bananabread1234 that’s a really good idea. I’ve often thought I have other symptoms of an underactive thyroid.

I think I will order an at home kit.

My gp gave me Duac and it deals with them tbh op, the ointment makes them go fast. Definitely start taking good care of your skin though and remove all make up when you're at home. Try to go some days without it if you can.

For me, fwiw, it was hair conditioner causing this. Same distribution of spots that you describe. I put it down to hormones for ages, always double cleansed and also bought one of those blue light devices just in case. But it was only when I stopped using conditioner that the big painful under-skin spots beneath my chin and on my jaw and neck went away.

Now if I go to the hairdresser and don’t warn them off using conditioner (because sometimes I can’t be bothered explaining and just think, oh once will probably be fine), I always get another breakout a week later. I’m becoming much firmer about it as a result!
