Travelling to Singapore

Hi all,

Need some advice...thinking about travelling to Singapore next year with DD (7). Is it safe to travel alone with DD, we will only be there for 3 nights as it's actually a stopover. I have looked at a few things I'd want to do with her, universal studios being one.

I would be very grateful for any advice on where to go, what to do, places to eat, places to avoid etc.

Thanks in advance x

Extremely safe.

However, make sure you and your daughter know about local laws Re vaping, smoking, chewing gum, litter etc. They take these things very seriously.

And if you use any recreational drugs, DO NOT try to take them into Singapore.

I absolutely love Singapore and spent a lot of time there growing up (parent worked out there for extended periods). It’s very safe and a great introduction to SE Asia if you haven’t been before.

The cable car over to sentosa (where universal studios is) is fab. Also highly recommend the night safari.
If you want a taste of old Singapore Little India and Chinatown are great to visit.

The MRT (train) system is clean and easy to navigate. I haven’t been to Jewel but if I manage to get back anytime soon I would love to see it (was last there in March 2020 so things were staring to shut down!). In the evening boat/Clarke/Robertson quays have an amazing atmosphere.

For food, there are loads of clean and very cheap hawker stalls which have a huge range of food. It’s very multicultural with lots of different Asian cuisines to try (you don’t have to buy from the same stalls so great if you are feeling more adventurous but want to get something a bit more western for your daughter).

It’s definitely worth a trip… I would move there if I could!

EveryOtherNameTaken · 10/09/2023 22:16

It's extremely safe. You can go anywhere night or day.
Just do as Veni above says.

Eating at hawkers bars especially Newton Circus are great. Or in food halls for lunch.

The night zoo is really good too.

It's quite sterile overall but perfect for a few days visit.

It’s a fabulous place for a stopover. Fabulous airport. Really safe, clean place. Incredibly hot and humid though.

Strokethefurrywall · 10/09/2023 22:20

Probably one of the safest countries you could think of.
I travelled there as a single woman, and loved it. Plenty to see and do, and you can always catch the train to Kuala Lumpur if you want to check out Malaysia which is one of my favorite cities.

Street food also fantastic there!

franke · 10/09/2023 22:24

We did a long stop over with Singapore Airlines and loads of the attractions were included in the deal.

It was very safe and a lot of fun for a couple of days. We loved the food centres.

perenniallymessy · 10/09/2023 22:28

Singapore is really safe and lots to do. Travelling around on the underground is easy, cheap and air conditioned! You can use a contactless card to pay and it'll calculate the fare. If your daughter is over 0.9m tall then you have to pay for her too, so if you've got another contactless card she can use that.

I suggest you either get an eSIM or buy a SIM when you get there so you can have data, then you can download the Grab app and get taxis if needed, they aren't that expensive. You can also use online maps to help you get around and they will show you public transport routes.

Universal Studios is really fun but some quite long queues, you can get an app that shows you the queue times. We loved the Shrek 4D show and the Stephen Spielberg special effects show. The Transformer ride is good too. There is also a waterpark on Sentosa island that is fun, but again lots of queues.

My DC enjoyed the gardens by the bay (the cloud forest is gorgeous) and the light display at Marina Bay Sands. You could also do the night zoo which is really recommended but we didn't get a chance.

You can get all sorts of foods there and it's quite reasonable most places. Where to go depends on budget and what you like to eat.

bnk2023 · 10/09/2023 22:38

Thank you so much everyone, this has been very helpful. Really appreciate the recommendations too, so will look into them.

Can't wait now! 😃

Absolutely one of the safest cities in the world. I adore it. So easy to get around on the MRT, super clean, everything just works. Not to mention the amazing food. I recommend the Botanic Gardens (they have a children’s garden too) and the SEA Aquarium, as well as FutureWorld if it’s still there. There’s loads to see if you’re only there a couple of days.
There is nowhere to avoid, unlike in other big cities.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 10/09/2023 22:51

You’ve had a lot of good recommendations, and as PPs said it literally couldn’t be safer. Used to live ther myself and DH went back there to work 2015-2018 and so me and DDs visited every school holiday. In all honesty I wouldn’t bother with Universal/Sentosa because it’s the kind of place that is the same wherever you go. I’d go to the Flyer, Gardens by the Bay, Night Safari, Botanical Gardens, maybe cycle through East Coast Park, maybe a trip to KL. You’re going to love it 😊

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 10/09/2023 22:52

Oh and definitely ArtScience Museum!!

Seems unlikely the OP is planning to be out doing drugs whilst travelling solo with her young daughter in a foreign country!

bnk2023 · 13/10/2023 01:17

Hi everyone,

Thank you for all the recommendations. I thought I'd come back here as we have booked tickets to visit next year and wondered if anyone can help me decide how to break down the days. Places we definitely want to visit - Universal studios, night safari, garden by the bay, art science museum, sky observation deck, also the digital show and watch the water extravaganza.

As previously mentioned I will be travelling with DD7, it will be a long flight including stop overs.

So we have
Singapore Day 1 - arrive 6.05am
Day 2 - all day
Day 3 - all day
Day 4 - departing flights at 10.25pm

Also to add it will be very hot when we travel so any tips are welcome!

TIA x

I spent three days in Singapore with DD(9) some years back. I deliberately chose to do a stopover there on a Uk-Aus flight as I wanted somewhere I would feel safe with her on my own and where there was a lot to do. My top tip would be to stay in as nice a hotel as you can afford, Singapore hotels are expensive but having somewhere with a rooftop pool where you can relax if you want a break is great. I like it around Colliers Quay as there are loads of restaurants and a good buzz. Taxis are dirt cheap so a good option to get around in the heat with a child. We did a boat trip along the river, the Singapore eye at twilight, Gardens by the Bay and Sentosa. There is a “duck tour” we did another time with all the kids which was good fun, it’s an amphibious vehicle so goes on the streets and in the water. DD loved Gluttons Corner Hawker Centre at Marina Bay for satay and noddles. Have fun!

S0upertrooper · 13/10/2023 03:04

Gardens by the bay, observation deck and light show are all in the same area so do these on one day. Try and go to the observation deck around 6.30- 7.30pm for the sunset and then go down to the bottom for the light show. You can eat at Gardens by the Bay (Satay by the Bay) and get an ice cream on the observation deck. This will cover about 3pm-8.30pm which is a long time for being outside.

The bird park has recently beèn moved next to the zoo where the night safari is. That's at the the top of the island (Gardens by the bay at the bottom), so you might want to make that trip in one day.

Universal is on an island called Sentosa. You can get the monorail and cable car to Sentosa, but if you take the cable car, get a taxi up to Mt faber to get the best trip. On Sentosa there are a few beaches. If you go to a beach restaurant called Coastes, you can hire sun beds, have a swim and something to eat which might be nice after a hot day at Universal.

Chinatown has a great atmosphere, if you like Dim Sum, go to a wee restaurant called Yum Cha, it's authentic and cheap. You'll get inside for a cold drink and a bit of AC. Have a look round the stalls, there's a temple and you might see the Aunties and Uncles dancing in the square.

If you need a bit of a breather, the botanic gardens are lovely, if you're lucky you might see an otter family. Start at the Napier end and finish at The Botanic Garden MRT end. Cluny Court is here, get a bite to eat and visit a traditional mall with independent boutique shops, including a toy shop.

Singapore is very busy and can be overwhelming. Remember to drink lots, take an umbrella and a damp face cloth for the sweat. Every restaurant provides free water, iced or warm. Locals drink warm. No need to buy bottled water in a restaurant.

Every mall, even the designer ones on Orchard Rd, have a hawkers/food court in the basement, so head there for cheap, fast, local food but take your own wet wipes as most stalls don't provide napkins. Kopi is local coffee, served with condensed milk and sugar. You can ask for less sweet. Fresh lime juice is very refreshing.

Download an app called Grab, this is what most folk use for taxis, a bit like Uber, you link your card to it. At the airport go down to the taxi level and the taxi uncle will get you a cab. Take cash for this (probably $30 max, some airport taxis don't take cards) No need to tip drivers or restaurant staff, it's included in the price. Moovit or City Mapper apps are good for buses or MRT times/routes. Public transport is dirt cheap, get a swipe card in the MRT station for both and you're unlikely to spend more than $10-20 for 3 days, less for a kid. You can top up at the MRT machines.

On the way back to the airport, give yourself plenty of time to visit the Jewel. It's right across from the airport, so after check in, you can skip over. There's a level upstairs with lots of things for kids to let off steam. If it's too early to check in, there's left luggage at the Jewel and some early check in desks at the Jewel, depending on your airline.

Singapore is one of the safest countries in the world but don't be too complacent, crime still happens, just not to same extent.

Hope you have a great trip.

i am a regular visitor (for work), you will love it. There is little l can add to the suggestions already made, particularly as you don’t have a lot of time.

A few thoughts though, without covering what has already been said.

  • There is no direct train to KL, that closed years ago and the proposed fast train never happened. Getting there by train would take around 6 hours.
  • Dress for extreme humidity. Having said that, keep a cardigan in your day bag, most shopping malls have freezing air con.
  • There are good quality maps posted throughout the city.
  • For a more leisurely pace, consider a boat trip to the islands. You will find them advertised locally.
  • Parks and gardens have (wild) monkeys, ‘careful with picnics, they are out to mug you 😀
  • Everything is green and lush; expect rain, particularly in the afternoons. Carry a brolly!
  • For Sentosa consider the cable car out and monorail back or vice versa. The part on arrival is quite theme park style, the other side, you can swim, but the sea is a brownie colour. It’s safe though.
  • Wine is very expensive.
  • The Orchard Road shops are not cheap.
  • Avoid the tourist rip off restaurants at Boat Quay, try “Food Street” in Chinatown instead.

l will repeat others, it is very safe. My PMs are open if there is anything you (or anyone else visiting) want to ask me.

Have a lovely time. x

bnk2023 · 13/10/2023 08:09

Thank you everyone, super helpful as I can plan my days ahead of time. I will note some of it down as I like to be well prepared before trips especially long haul ones! Some of the things you guys mentioned I wouldn’t have even known/thought of so it’s very much appreciated. 😊

I will leave for the airport ahead of time as I’d like to visit the jewel too.

PP mentioned to stay in a good hotel, that I definitely will as I would want to feel relaxed with DD. Any other areas you’d recommend just so I can have a few options. I like to be central to most things but it’s not always a problem if we aren’t. Also everyone’s mentioned taxis and transport is cheap so it wouldn’t bother me if we weren’t centrally located.

X

OP, l would recommend staying in the Clarke Quay area. Right on the river, lively at night but not silly. A mix of old and new with tasteful restoration and more soul than the shopping malls of the Orchard Road. The station is just across the bridge. If your budget will run to it, it’s worth considering an hotel with a pool. Lovely for a cool off at the end of the day.

saraclara · 13/10/2023 08:53

I loved Clarke Quay as a base when traveling with kids. Though it's been a while now and of course Singapore is constantly changing. But nighttime round there was great.

Sorry but I had to laugh at your OP asking if Singapore is safe! If there's a safer place in the world, I wonder where it is. People actively decide not to go there because it's too safe and 'sterile'. I disagree with the latter, but I can see what they get that impression.
