Very confused here, Has anyone else experienced anything like this?

Saturday morning I got two notifications from my bank (lloyds) saying two payments had gone out (both to the same company), I had no idea what they were and I had never heard of the company name before so I googled it and it turns out its a local clothes shop. First one was for £15, the other was for £56.90.

I have been in this shop once the first day it opened (Maybe two years ago) just to have a look at the clothes but I didn't buy anything. I have never made a purchace in this shop.

According to my bank app the purchases happened in April and May and have only now come out of my balance.

Called Lloyds and they said it wasn't an online purchase, it was done in person, as in the card was put into the machine and my pin was entered, Which means its not classed as fraud and there is nothing they can do. I won't be getting my money back.

I live alone, No kids, single, nobody on this Earth knows my pin, I'm so confused. Has anything like this happened to anyone else?

So do you still have your card or not?

jolaylasofia · 10/09/2023 20:01

someone had cloned your card

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 10/09/2023 20:01

No, but presumably your card was cloned or Lloyds are mistaken and your PIN was not used, just contactless. In your place I’d go to the shop and ask them to track down the details of the purchase, they should have records of those amounts and your card number. Go from there.

Sounds like your card has been cloned. You need to call the bank again.

Icepinkeskimo · 10/09/2023 20:04

As others have wrote it has all the hallmarks of a cloned card.
Contact your bank as a matter of urgency.

I had something similar lately. A £40 transaction appeared on my bank statement for a shop that I've never been to.
The transaction had been made in person, in the shop.

I called my bank and they investigated it as fraud. They cancelled my card and reissued a new one. The bank reimbursed me £40.

If this account is a regular bank account (eg current account / payment account) then you are protected under the payments directive for any fraudulent transactions as long as you let your bank know as soon as you become aware it's fraud. Check your account t&cs about how they expect you to formally alert them to fraud. This regulation means that the most you can be liable for is £35 for the entire fraud (not per transaction). Though many banks will refund in full if it's fraud for customer relationship reasons. The legislation specifically says that just because a pin/card tap (or other form of electronic approval) was used, it can still be fraud - your bank has to prove that it's not fraud not you having to prove that it is.
Write to your bank manager saying it these are fraudulent transactions, that you want the full amount returned and that you want them to protect you from future such fraudulent transaction. (Though you may have to concede on £35 loss in the end).
The manager will have to trigger an investigation. If you are not happy with that outcome then make a complaint to their in-house complaints department. Again, if you're not satisfied with that then make a complaint to the FCA/ombudsman.

I get really cross when banks mislead consumers about their legal rights.

Does help a bit to avoid this if you protect your cards with RFID protection at least your card can’t be read while out … don’t know how else to protect our accounts when making purchased though..

MariaLuna · 11/01/2024 00:29

Open a new bank account with a different bank.

Fuck these people asleep at the job.

@Atsocta

Thanks for posting that link.

Everybody needs it.

I clicked on Atsocta's link and ironically my phone said that site cannot provide a secure connection.

Atsocta · 11/01/2024 01:12

Very welcome x thought there maybe a few who still didn't know about it, my bank manager told me awhile back about using RFID card protection

Atsocta · 11/01/2024 01:14

At LauderSyme · ok just google RFID there’s plenty of links to tell you about it ..hope that helps

KievLoverTwo · 11/01/2024 01:15

Sounds like your card was cloned but the details have only just been sold on.

LauderSyme · 11/01/2024 01:17

@Atsocta thank you

Bouledeneige · 12/01/2024 08:25

Your card must have been cloned. So you should cancel the card and get a new one. I'm surprised the transaction used chip and pin and I would've thought these kind of transactions are very rare these days - usually it's just a tap. Anyway, the bank should've suggested your card be cancelled given you didn't make these transactions.

Make sure no one can walk away with your card to clone it in future.
