Adventurous activity for an immobile 80 year old?

AmicableHonest · 10/09/2023 16:25

My mum will be 80 next year and would like to do something adventurous - she mentioned a microlight flight in passing. She has limited mobility - can't walk far and uses a walker, she can manage steps but needs a handrail. I'd really like to arrange something that ticks the 'adventurous' box for her but I don't know what given her physical limitations. Any suggestions? Her heart's fine by the way!

What about one of those zero gravity blown air tube things. Like parachute gymnastics teams train in?

Floralnomad · 10/09/2023 17:18

How adventurous does she want , would a trip up the Shard for champagne and a go in the very fast lift suffice .

Lindtnotlint · 10/09/2023 17:19

Falconry?

Disneyland Paris

London eye or the cable car across the thames? The shard maybe?

Definitely not indoor skydiving. You have to be physically able to hold your arms and legs in position against the buffeting. I ached for days afterwards as my arms felt like they’d be yanked out of their sockets.

Go Ape?

Definitely not Go Ape, lots of ladders, tunnels, things to step on/over.

Sailing? My local sailability has a big boat that people can go in and be sailed around in, including in a wheelchair. So she’d be able to walk on with her walker. They also have adaptive boats for people who want to sail themselves (or sail with a buddy) and hoists for getting in and out.

Jubilee Sailing Trust have an accessible tall ship and sometimes you can go for the day.

I think virtual reality is a good idea.

Tandem skydive is a possibility.

I'd be a little wary of things round water, unless its in a big boat that she's unlikely to fall off, as retrieval might be difficult. But passenger on a (stable) speedboat might work, depending on how you get in/out (you'd have to interrogate the providers).

Archery? Can be adapted to do seated - but need to be strong enough to hold the bow steady.

Ride in a horse-drawn carriage?

See if Riding for the Disabled could offer anything

Blood sports like croquet Grin

Adaptive skiing?

Baldieheid · 10/09/2023 17:48

Is there anywhere close to you that does those wheelchair drawn horse carriage rides on a lovely sandy beach? Wind in the hair, blast of fresh air and a wee bit of speed without any risk of injury?

What does your mum consider ‘adventurous’?

And is it something she has done before or something new She has never tried?

LIZS · 10/09/2023 18:08

Steam train or pleasure boat ride.

SandcastleQueen · 10/09/2023 18:15

I second the Jubilee Sailing Trust, my mum went on a trip with them and loved it. They have lifts between decks and accessible ways to get up the rigging; a buddy system with able bodied sailors, it sounded amazing. Mum was well seasick though 😅

GlassHeart1 · 10/09/2023 19:18

Would this work? Totally safe and I'd say adventurous... or any other fly simulator perhaps?

Notoironing · 10/09/2023 19:26

I was going to say speedboat or glass bottomed boat perhaps.

lapsedbookworm · 10/09/2023 19:28

Zip lining in Wales - I know someone who had severe Parkinsons and immobile and managed- he loved it.

Vintage air craft flight

But she'd have to climb into the plane.

NutellaNut · 10/09/2023 19:38

How about a drive in a super car or rally car? (Driven by a professional driver) or driven in a tank or monster truck?

Loopyloooooo · 10/09/2023 19:40

"Clip n climb"? If there's one in your area. They have different levels of accesible equipment, which includes them being able to hoist a fully wheelchair dependant person to the top in special climbing equipment. They'll be used to people with mobility issues and it will feel a bit more controlled/safer being inside with other people doing the work etc.

Loopyloooooo · 10/09/2023 19:42

Oooh also, you could see if there's a "wet wheels" in your area for accesible boat rides....or there are also accesible surfing board sessions you can do, not sure of company name for those tho.
