Overdone running in the heat, what can I do?

madeinmanc · 10/09/2023 15:40

I did a 10k yesterday (very early morning) plus some other exercise and got overenthusiastic and did another this morning. That might not be a lot to some but I usually leave a day between 10ks. I mean, I do run but not 10ks back to back in the heat. I thought I was fine but I've started feeling a bit jittery, weak and shaky this afternoon and I've had to cancel my plans to go out 😞 I have used electrolyte tablets and kept hydrated. Is there anything else I can do? Thanks.

Lie down?

Pleasenowthatsenough · 10/09/2023 15:42

Just rest and take it very easy, I would be lying down. Make sure to eat well, good nutritious food and maybe take a soak later if you feel like it.

madeinmanc · 10/09/2023 15:44

Thanks, maybe a cool shower is an idea. I notice I am still feeling warm even though the temperature has dropped a bit in my location.

What an idiot lol

Hi @madeinmanc
Try soaking your feet in cold water xx

Verite1 · 10/09/2023 15:58

Lots of water and lie down in dark room for a few hours and try and sleep. I’ve done this before. You will probably feel better in 24 hours.

Charlattanus23 · 10/09/2023 15:59

One trick my partner (South African born) often suggests is to soak a teatowel or two in cool water and put it on the back of your neck/forehead/under your arms. Stay hydrated. Problem with the UK is, it's not just the headline temperature, it's the ruddy humidity...I'll be very glad when this weather breaks.

GrumpyPanda · 10/09/2023 16:04

Sounds like you're overheated, and sweating alone didn't bring down your body temp. When I was living in the Caucasus without aircon, my go-to was to lie in a tub filled with cold water. That's assuming your heart is fine. A gentler but slower approach would be the aforementioned soaking your feet.

Other than that, hydration, electrolytes and rest.

Mariposista · 10/09/2023 16:06

Hydrate hydrate and also get some food back into you. Nothing too heavy.
I remember being the same after my first half marathon - I'd even 3 oranges straight after and was doubled over with the acid on an empty stomach and I fell asleep on my lounge floor (cooler than the bedroom hahaha). Never made that mistake again.

dizzydizzydizzy · 10/09/2023 16:07

Cool bath. Fan. Cold drinks. Ice cream.

Have you taken your temperature? Is it normal?

Privatelyliving · 10/09/2023 16:11

I've done a half marathon this morning. Currently in a group chat with clubmates. Some seem fine and are in the pub but quite a few of us not doing so well.

Its basically all the things you'd to to recover from any other run. Carbs, liquids, salt, rest.

Strokethefurrywall · 10/09/2023 16:12

Get yourself some electrolytes and rest a lot. Marmite on toast if you can manage it too, the salts and B vitamins help.

I live in the Caribbean and run regularly at 5am because it's 28oc around the clock. Humidity is a killer and takes a lot to adjust to running in heat.

I'm flying back to Uk on Wednesday for a week and I can't wait to run in more acceptable temperatures!

Hope you recover quickly!

Privatelyliving · 10/09/2023 16:12

My resting heart rate is very high and my blood pressure very low, but it will be Ok by morning. I'm not going to shower while there's no one else in the house though, just in case.

That doesn't sound good, could you have heatstroke?

tallsmallmum · 10/09/2023 16:20

Electrolytes and all the other advice given x

Possibly a touch buy I don't feel any worse than after other tough runs.

Bumply · 10/09/2023 16:28

I got heatstroke during a 10k race once.
The only treatment I got was ice pack around my neck and lying down with my feet elevated. Once I'd recovered enough to make it home I was horribly sick with vomiting, but was ok after plenty of rest

Lovebali · 10/09/2023 16:32

It's truly horrible when you've over cooked it like that. No more advice than everyone else, food, drink and rest. I got the mother of all headaches last time I overdid it, just lay on the bathroom floor feeling like death. I had run 30 miles in 30 degrees, not a great combo! Hope you feel better soon xx

AuntieStella · 10/09/2023 16:41

Rest, rest and more rest.

I got too hot at a Half last weekend, and haven't run since. I've been out for walks, and have done a couple of sessions of another sport, because I decided I need considerably longer recovery time when it's hot. (For context, I usually run 3 or 4 times a week, anywhere between 2 and 10 miles per run)

Hope everyone at GNR today is OK

madeinmanc · 10/09/2023 16:46

Thanks for the tips everyone, it's all great information. I knew there were serious runners on here so that's why I asked here. I finally napped a little and now feel somewhat better. I think I've been lucky that temperatures have slightly come down. I will end up wasting/doing nothing today and tonight though.

There's such a fine line between pushing yourself and overdoing it.

Hope you feel better soon too, @Privatelyliving.

I've eaten almonds, Greek yoghurt and two apples, I don't have any carbs in the house apart from apples. Should I eat more apples or have one of those SIS energy gels? It seems odd to have one now but maybe it would help? 🤔 I don't want to get loaded up with excess energy when I'm lying on the bed though 😕

Order a takeaway if you've nothing in the house other than health food. It will have the salt, fats and carbs your body needs.

How do you run without carbs? Nothing sugary at all? Yes have the gel.

Montydin · 10/09/2023 16:53

Is that all you’ve eaten today since the run? You need some proper food inside you. Can you order a grocery shop on deliveroo or a takeaway?

As a side note if you don’t fuel properly you will feel this ill after a lot of your runs and not just in the heat. Make sure you have some carbs in the house - bagels, eggs on toast, pasta etc are all good fuels after a run.

backtoweights · 10/09/2023 17:06

Doing that much exercise with that little food sounds like eating disorder territory.

madeinmanc · 10/09/2023 17:10

I've remembered I also had cashews and one of those dates and nut bars (quite sugary). I tend to eat fairly low carb because I'm at high risk of developing type 2 diabetes, unfortunately.

Having said that, I had a pizza last night but I cycled a long way to get it so I think (hope) I burned that off.

Also, there's sugars in things like the energy gels (maltodextrin) and the electrolyte mix (not the tabs).

How are you now, @Privatelyliving?
