Working/staying away for work must haves'

I've WFH for 4yrs. Remind what are your must have's for 3 nights away for work in the UK. Its a 5hr commute each way! 😩
I used to work in another city a few times a year- but seem to have lost the ability to recall things to take!

This is my 'all season' list but does not include actual outfits. Just all the things Ive forgotten in the past...

I also track the BBC weather app as for a 5 hour trip, the weather could be very different!

A sandwich bag with preferred teabags, I want green tea. Lidded thermal mug for the car, and a good audio book. A stash of snacks, mine is usually fruit and homemade flapjacks.

I have a little hot water bottle I take in the winter. Might not bother you but I like something more relaxed to change into after work is finished.

The standard make up bag and toiletries. All of which get chucked in a bag after I use them the morning I go away.

Don't forget the phone/laptop chargers 😀

Depending on where you are staying get s good travel hair dryer as the cheaper hotels often either don't have one at all or have ones that overheat all the time. That's my number one tip from lots of staying away in travelodges and the like.
I also take some cans and snacks in case I don't fancy dinner solo. Cheaper than buying on the hotel.

SM4713 · 09/09/2023 22:03

Thank you. I'd completely forgotten to pack make-up!

Condoms 😉

Beckafett · 09/09/2023 22:14

I don't stay away that often but when I do for work I like my own toiletries, a really good book esp one I can hold in one hand if I'm eating on my own.
Pjs, something like a hoodie and at least one change of shoes- for me it's not a fashion thing it's more to drive/ walk in.
Plus a snack!! I always fancy a treat pre bed when I'm away and get cross if I have nothing with me!

Condoms 😉

Hmm, maybe 20yrs ago but happily married since then. Thanks though as they are something I would never have considered taking 😂

Travel cup
Long phone charger
Antibac wipes

letmesailletmesail · 09/09/2023 23:55

If you are relying on your pre-Covid list, just factor in any changes in your life since then. My first work trip away and I forgot my glasses, HRT and tweezers (for the chin hairs)!

OnAFrolicOfMyOwn · 10/09/2023 00:01

My list is weirdly similar to @lionsleepstonight 's.

From observation of colleagues, a pen is the most commonly forgotten thing!

If you're going to be doing this regularly, buy duplicates of all items you reasonably can and keep them permanently in your case.

CCTVcity · 10/09/2023 00:07

2m power chargers all the way!

My other favourite thing is a travel WiFi on an alternative carrier to phone network. Nothing worse than shitty internet when working away!

youveturnedupwelldone · 10/09/2023 07:16

My list of creature comforts for work trips grew and grew! It makes such a difference.

Some of the things I found made it a bit more pleasant:

Be fussy about the hotel you stay in. I flat refuse to stay in a travelodge or premier inn these days - they are hit and miss, a tired one for three days is a form of torture. I even change my travel dates if necessary to work around this.

Check out locations when you book, I've been able to do a couple of work trips over the summer that have felt almost like a short break because of the location (and cost no more than any other hotel in the particular city).

Plan your evenings in advance, I've managed to have some nice evenings out at the theatre, lovely walks in parks, seaside walks etc - make the max of your free time. Ditch your colleagues too! If you know anyone in the area arrange to meet up with them.

Take enough chargers/cables etc

A good travel cup and your preferred teabags makes a difference

A change of shoes! So many people try to save space with just the one pair, somehow I find it comforting to be able to change my shoes of an evening!

Laundry sheets and a travel washing line is so very useful

Get some folding travel hangers, so many hotels there aren't enough, it's a small hit wildly annoying thing!

If you want to wash your hair take your own dryer, hotel ones are so hit and miss

Definitely a pen!

Take a shower cap

katmarie · 10/09/2023 07:39

I always take an extension cable with multiple plug points and usb points. I find I usually have 2 or 3 devices to charge plus my laptop, and I usually end up working in the hotel some too, so it's just easier.

Welcomer · 10/09/2023 07:43

For three nights I'd pack:
The correct number of work outfits
My usual toiletries
PJs
Thick socks to wear in the hotel room
My own tea bags
Laptop and charger
Glasses
A book

autumn1610 · 10/09/2023 08:24

Vibrator always gets popped in my bag

PauliesWalnuts · 10/09/2023 08:33

I take most of the above. Always take my lightweight Parlux hairdryer. Also take exercise leggings, trainers, top and lightweight hoodie, either for downtime after work or if I go out exploring.

Whataretheodds · 10/09/2023 08:43

Eye mask
Ear plugs
Even if it's warm, a wrap or jumper for violent air-conditioning
A padlock for my case

headcheffer · 10/09/2023 08:45

I take my work outfits, minimal wash bag and minimal make up bag. Porridge pots for the morning as I hate hotel breakfasts before work. Exercise clothes as I like to workout in the hotel gym. Laptop and whatever else you need for work, plus my refillable water bottle and coffee cup. We don't socialise in the evenings so I take proper PJs so I can chill in my room in the evening with room service! I like to travel light as I hate carrying a big bag into the office on the last day before travelling home. I usually commute to our northern office by train, so I pick up hotel room snacks from the station M&S on my way and then pick up a train picnic for myself on the way home!

Piony · 10/09/2023 08:46

I take a nice big china mug. I don't really trust the cleanliness mugs in hotel rooms, and they are too small.
