Inpost - underpaid postage on Vinted

I've sold a bundle and now realised that the parcel size I selected is too small, I thought if it was under 1kg it was small but turns out it's 500g! Parcel is about 700g. Buyer has already paid. Shall I just send and hope for the best? Anyone else got away with it? Or do I need to contact buyer and try to change it? I have no idea how!

I've never weighed a parcel posted with inpost and never had an issue, I don't think they actually weigh them do they?

Freepo · 09/09/2023 20:02

I don’t think you could change it - you’d need to agree with the buyer to cancel the sale, relist it with the correct postage and reserve for that buyer (if they still want it). I don’t know how strict they are and if you’re likely to get caught though sorry

Wouldn't it be more to do with if the package will fit a small size locker?

Indiacalling · 09/09/2023 20:19

As the previous poster says, you need to let the buyer know, then cancel the sale and re-list the goods, and the buyer has to buy it again.
it is in their FAQs.
(I made the same mistake - buyer was fine with doing the sale again, I knocked a bit off the price to cover the difference in postage).

Send and hope for the best. I've never sent much other than a small size parcel and everything goes no problem.

VanillaImpulse · 09/09/2023 21:12

Yeah I'm quite tempted to risk it, it's not like it's that much different and will fit into a small locker. I guess if it doesn't work out then it's a lesson learned to weigh them first in future!

Go for it and let us know what happens

Pizzanight · 10/09/2023 20:01

You'll be fine with inpost. If you can shove it in the locker, they'll take it. Royal mail would be a different story.

ExperiencedTeacher · 10/09/2023 20:09

I’ve literally just had this but the difference in weight was much bigger. I contacted my buyer and suggested I split the bundle and I’ll pay for the second parcel. The buyer said to risk sending it as one. I’ll refund them if they get charged for it. It hasn’t arrived yet so I don’t know the outcome!

When you select the postage for a Vinted listing always double check the size/weights it has against the postage options
Small/medium/large can be slightly different between two different categories

I also found out last week that my InPost label was a Royal Mail label, which meant dropping off at an InPost locker but it would then be passed on through Royal Mail.
This meant that it was limited to 500gram. Once boxed, some extra wrap and label it was over 500gram, I could have risked it but my scales may also have been inaccurate - if overweight then even worse would have been the buyer getting an excess charge and claiming back against me
(I unpacked, trimmed down the folded panels and restuck it all without so much extra wrapping to get it within 500grams)

Once in the system usually things will pass through, and as moved on in bulk could be as a full sack etc

when dropped off at a locker the carrier collects each individual item so may notice an excessive weight
At a shop drop off point nearby the carrier has made random spot checks of some packages on pick up - this was found out when a friend was tracking their package that they had dropped off at the shop but wasn’t moving on. When they turned up to ask why it was because it was picked out as overweight - and then left until they enquire
