Proposed Statement of Special Educational Needs

Finally after 9 years of pushing and questioning and fighting I have today received the proposed Statement of Educational Needs for my 13 yr old. I have asked and pushed since he started year 1 did he need an assessment. I was consistently told that he was top of his class and others were more in need of an assessment. In Northern Ireland most schools are only allowed two referrals for assessment a year!
I convinced his primary school to refer for assessment for DCD when he was in year 4 as it was medical rather than Ed Psych. When we were seen by community paeds I brought up my concerns re possible Autism they agreed and referred for assessment, in Feb 2020 he received his Autism diagnosis but Covid and lockdowns hit and no further help was provided educationally. He started grammar school in 2021 and fell apart, it has been a total disaster for him with his sensory issues to noise etc. His new school have been amazing with strategies and pushed the Education Authority for statementing. I got that draft statement through today, once accepted he will get classroom assistant hours and support to help him navigate through school so that he can reach his full potential as it also states he needs to be put on the gifted and talented register and needs challenging educationally. I don’t know why I’m writing this, it’s just a relief that finally he will be able to access his educational potential. I did have a little cry and a large glass of wine this evening.

I am so sorry you have had to fight for so long.

I am in England, and SEND provision is just shocking here too.

Because it only destroys the lives of a minority of people, Government after Government has let it continue to be underfunded. Families here are on their knees and don't have the energy to contact their MPs, rally together, form pressure groups etc, and so the powers that be continue to sweep it under the carpet.
Where I live, special school places are like hens' teeth. It has become nigh on impossible to get EHCPs (the replacement for Statements here) and yet there are more and more children with such significant needs who need the support.

However, I am pleased you have finally go his Statement, and I hope you enjoy your wine. Wine

I feel both your pain and your relief. I fought from the age of 5 until my son was 10 for diagnosis and EHCP. It’s a ridiculously hard fight and such a huge relief when it’s finally sorted. Provision for SEN kids is shocking as a whole.

Well done you!

I wish I could say getting an EHCP made much of a difference in England-I hope it’s different for you. I find increasingly that the paperwork is generic and meaningless, the funding inadequate and the LA are unaccountable. SEND is falling apart.

I think like a lot of things it’s how committed the school is to follow the advice in the statement, some pay lip service often because they are to busy, have massive classes and are totally underfunded. I’m just hoping this will work for him, it’s so hard sending him off every day knowing how stressful school is for him. But it’s a battle I will keep fighting as long as I have to.

Sending love and well done OP. Yes, schools have been stripped of the resources to support SEN kids and local authorities are so broke they avoid doing anything if they possibly can. My DD was broken by Covid lockdowns as well and was without a physical school place for 16 m until I went ballistic at the LEA and told them which laws they were breaking. She has an EHCP because I applied for it. I'm scared to think what happens to the kids whose parents don't speak bureaucracy.

I know it’s a while from I posted we had received my sons draft statement, it has since been confirmed, he was awarded 25 Classroom Assistant hours and we had hi annual review today. The school is delighted with how much less stressed he is, he’s even starting to make friends!! We have noticed he’s much calmer going to school and doesn’t get as overwhelmed. His CA is an absolute legend who gets him. She doesn’t crowd him but can read his body language so is there when he needs her so he doesn’t spiral! I know we’ll have bumps in the road but for now I’m delighted!!
