Shoes for a new walker - nursery

SunshineHello · 08/09/2023 20:05

My baby is a year old and has just learned to walk - wobbly still, can manage a metre or two.

I have read they shouldn’t wear shoes until they are confident walkers. She isn’t.

Nursery have asked for shoes. I bought some suede soled ‘pre walkers’ but they now say these aren’t suitable as they have no grip.

What should I be buying? A hard rubber sole seems to go against advice.

What should I be buying? Thank you

Start rite have some pre pre walkers, I think they called them crawlies, and is what John Lewis recommended for my similar DS. They're very flexible but are a definite shoe rather than the slipper type ones

youwerentthere · 08/09/2023 20:09

It was also nursery for us that wanted shoes which goes against the guidance but whatever. They also demanded wellies which he is hilarious trying to walk in 🤷🏻‍♀️

I didn’t buy pre walkers or any footwear until they were walking confidently outdoors. Couldn’t understand putting on ‘shoes’ of any kind on babies.

Nursery are being ridiculous. Baby will have both hands and feet on the floor to crawl. If you can find a more grippy crawler shoe that is fully flexible I'd get that to keep the peace but definitely not proper shoes yet!

AvengedQuince · 08/09/2023 20:16

Also, babies can be cruising or walking with push along toys months before they walk, do they want shoes then when they are as young as six months? If not, what is the difference when they stop holding on?

welshweasel · 08/09/2023 20:20

We got Clarks prewalkers for nursery, as he was spending so much time cruising outside.

Alwaystired2023 · 08/09/2023 20:21

Have a look on bobux their shoes are so lovely and they have pre walkers with grip - I just used to buy in the sale a few sizes at a time and she would wear the exact same shoes forever 😂

Overthebow · 08/09/2023 20:23

Have they said when they will be wearing shoes? At the nursery dd goes to the babies just wear shoes when going outside, as they share a garden with toddlers so it’s safer for them. They don’t wear shoes inside. We got dd clarks pre-walkers for nursery and they were fine.

@youwerentthere these look good. Is this kind of sole ok for them to learn to walk with then?

@welshweasel had a look at the Clark’s ones (admittedly only online) and the soles all look so solid! I need to visit a shop and see what they suggest - annoyingly my local Clark’s just closed down so a bit of a faff.

@Alwaystired2023 will check out bobux! Are they waterproof? Conscious it’s going to start being wet and cold soon.

Thank you for all these great recommendations so far

I really like bobux they have a range of prewalkers and are orthotic

SunshineHello · 08/09/2023 20:26

@Overthebow they seem to
wear shoes indoors at all times.

The initial reason they asked for
any shoes at all, was to stop
their feet being hurt if they stood on something.

I personally would be relaxed with them being barefoot, but apparently this is not ok.

There used to be sort of cruiser shoes that Clarks etc did that were super flexible but also grippy. When DC ran out of sizes of those we went to happy little soles (online) who do "barefoot" style shoes which are similarly nice and flexible. There's actually an independent shop in our town who sell that type now too.

busybusybusymum · 08/09/2023 20:33

Inch blue do the soft baby shoes you have but with the option of a rubber sole.
We also used play shoes waterproof footies (from Amazon) for outside crawling/toddling.

thirdfiddle · 08/09/2023 20:33

Yes, have a look at Clarks pre-walker shoes, we found those ones more flexible than the actual barefoot brands. Start rite prob have something similar.

Olika · 08/09/2023 20:38

I bought mine Masocio first walking shoes on Amazon and they were great. DD was comfortable wearing them from the very beginning.

Alwaystired2023 · 08/09/2023 21:11

Yes they do a wide range for all seasons , just split up into 'pre walkers' 'cruisers' 'a word for confident walkers' and 'walkers?'

Old Soles were great for DC. There are a lot on sale at Natural Baby Shower (https://www.naturalbabyshower.co.uk/search?type=product%2Carticle%2Cpage&q=Old+soles+). Very flexible but grippy.
