How did people wash up before washing up liquid?

It just occurred to me that I have no idea.
What did people use in say the 1920s or the 1820s even?

Household soap.

ShadowPuppets · 08/09/2023 18:36

It’s just soap? According to Wikipedia “Humans have used soap for millennia; evidence exists for the production of soap-like materials in ancient Babylon around 2800 BC.“

SusanSHelit · 08/09/2023 18:36

Bar soap, been around since medieval times

EbiRaisukaree · 08/09/2023 18:37

Soap flakes, shaved off a bar and into water and frothed up by hand. Sand was used to scrub pans and things; ash was another possibility.

It was literally the blood of fairies, sounds inhumane but it was different times. Hence today's Fairy Liquid.

Just soap, lots of places don’t use liquid soap.

Hedjwitch · 08/09/2023 18:43

🤣 Aromantic.

Bar soap, grated into water. And no plastic bottle waste

Angie147836 · 08/09/2023 18:43

Soap I think. My granny (born 1901) always had a wood handled dishbrush and a bar of yellow coal tar soap by her sink.

KirstenBlest · 08/09/2023 18:50

@AromanticSpices , so is fairy blood green?

BIossomtoes · 08/09/2023 18:54

My aunt (born 1906) used household (Sunlight) soap and washing soda. She also used that shiny loo paper that was like tracing paper.

Should perhaps ban washing liquid and return to this to save plastic.

HappiDaze · 08/09/2023 19:05

Soap and or rubbing vigorously against a ribbed wooden board dunked in water or a river

HappiDaze · 08/09/2023 19:05

There are plants with soapy qualities I forget which

GoingToBeLessRubbishAtLife · 08/09/2023 19:06

Ash from a fire or earth is good for washing up.

HappiDaze · 08/09/2023 19:06

It's called Soapwort

HappiDaze · 08/09/2023 19:09

Soap is made from fat which emulsifies

I think they use fat from liposuction to make soap in the film 'Fight Club' as an example ConfusedGrin

I've got a log burner and to clean the glass I spit on some scrunched up newspaper, dip it it the ash and rub the glass. Comes up a treat!

Great idea let's stick people back in the kitchen all day to do housework, such fun. NOT Hmm

Ahh I love all these old ways.

sarsaparillatree · 08/09/2023 19:11

My mother used to use a greyish creamy stuff called Gumption for burnt on dirt, and to clean sinks. I think it might have been made from powdered pumice mixed with something...

RaininSummer · 08/09/2023 19:12

Happidsaze ...would it really take that much longer to use soap rather than liquid?

I buy washing up liquid in 5 litre bottles and fill a cheap decanter which I keep by the sink. It looks a lot better than an ugly plastic bottle - not so good if a guest decides to try the "Creme de Menthe" you've left out in the kitchen.

If I could buy Fairy in refillable bottles I would happily do so.
